MRI Scan Carotid

A carotid MRI is a noninvasive scan that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the carotid arteries in the neck. It detects narrowing, plaque, dissections, or blood-flow problems to assess stroke risk and guide treatment. Contrast (gadolinium) may be used. It involves no ionizing radiation but has contraindications such as some implants and requires removing metal objects.

Yes. MRI reliably visualizes neck problems involving soft tissues, intervertebral discs, spinal cord, nerve roots, tumors, infections and inflammatory changes. It detects disc herniation, spinal stenosis and nerve compression that correlate with symptoms. MRI is less sensitive for acute fractures or subtle bone detail (CT better) and may not identify purely muscular strain or functional pain; contrast-enhanced studies improve detection of infection or tumor.

Carotid duplex ultrasound (Doppler ultrasound) is the preferred first-line scan for evaluating the carotid arteries. It’s noninvasive, widely available, and assesses vessel anatomy, plaque and blood flow to estimate stenosis. CT angiography or MR angiography are used when more anatomical detail is needed or ultrasound is inconclusive; digital subtraction angiography is the invasive gold standard for complex cases or interventions.

Warning signs of a blocked carotid artery include sudden weakness, numbness, or paralysis on one side of the body; slurred or confused speech and difficulty understanding language; sudden vision loss or double vision in one eye; dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; severe unexplained headache; and transient ischemic attack symptoms (brief stroke‑like episodes). Seek emergency care immediately if any occur.

Carotid scanning uses ultrasound to detect narrowing or plaque in the carotid arteries. It identifies atherosclerosis, estimates stroke risk, and helps decide treatments—medical therapy, lifestyle changes, or procedures (endarterectomy or stenting). Scans evaluate symptoms such as transient ischemic attack or stroke and monitor plaque progression in people with risk factors (age, hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking) to prevent future events.

The carotid arteries in the neck are critical — they supply oxygenated blood to the brain. Narrowing or blockage (carotid artery disease) can cause transient ischemic attacks or ischemic stroke and is potentially life‑threatening. Symptoms include sudden weakness, numbness, slurred speech, or vision loss. Early diagnosis and treatment (risk‑factor control, medications, or procedures) greatly reduce stroke risk; seek urgent evaluation for concerning symptoms.
