MRI Scan Brain

An MRI of the brain provides detailed images of brain anatomy and soft tissues, detecting tumors, stroke-related changes, bleeding, infections, inflammation, demyelinating diseases (like multiple sclerosis), congenital malformations, hydrocephalus, atrophy, and vascular abnormalities. With contrast, it highlights abnormal blood–brain barrier or active lesions. It guides diagnosis, monitors disease progression, and assists surgical or treatment planning without ionizing radiation.

A brain MRI usually takes 20 to 60 minutes for the imaging itself; with preparation and paperwork the whole appointment can last 30 to 90 minutes. If contrast dye is used, add about 10 to 20 minutes for injection and observation. Total time varies with the number of sequences, image detail required, patient movement, or need for sedation. Your radiology team will give an exact estimate.

Do not wear metal jewelry, piercings, or clothing with metallic threads; remove hearing aids, dentures, insulin pumps and electronic devices. Do not hide implants (pacemaker, aneurysm clips, cochlear implant, neurostimulator) or prior metal fragments in the eye. Avoid metallic makeup, perfume, and tattoos with metallic ink. Don’t eat or drink if you’ve been instructed to fast for contrast, and always report pregnancy or contrast allergies.

Yes—MRI can reveal many forms of brain damage such as stroke, hemorrhage, contusions, tumors and white‑matter injury. It’s often more sensitive than CT; specialized sequences (DWI, SWI, FLAIR) detect acute ischemia, microbleeds, edema and chronic changes. However, microscopic axonal injury or purely functional/metabolic damage may not be visible, so clinical evaluation and other tests may still be needed.

Brain MRI can detect strokes (ischemic and hemorrhagic), brain tumors, multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating diseases, Alzheimer’s and other dementias, infections (encephalitis, abscess), hydrocephalus, traumatic brain injury and contusions, vascular problems (aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations), white matter changes, and congenital or developmental brain abnormalities. It also identifies epilepsy foci, pituitary and cranial-nerve lesions, inflammation, post-surgical changes, and helps monitor disease progression or treatment response.

Yes, for a routine brain MRI you can generally eat and drink normally beforehand. Exceptions: if contrast (gadolinium) will be used, your clinic may ask you to fast for 4–6 hours, and if sedation or anesthesia is planned, fasting rules apply. Take essential medications with small sips of water. Always follow the specific instructions from your imaging center or doctor.
