MRI Scan Brain With Angiography

Brain angiography MRI, or MR angiography (MRA), is a noninvasive scan that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of cerebral blood vessels. It can be done with or without gadolinium contrast (or with time‑of‑flight techniques) to detect aneurysms, vessel narrowing, arteriovenous malformations, or clots. It avoids ionizing radiation and helps guide diagnosis and treatment.

MRI can detect brain artery blockage. MR angiography (MRA) visualizes cerebral vessels and can identify occlusions or severe narrowing, while diffusion‑ and perfusion‑weighted MRI show resulting ischemia and tissue at risk. Contrast‑enhanced or high‑resolution MRA improves accuracy, but very small distal vessel disease or calcified plaques may be missed; invasive digital subtraction angiography can be definitive when uncertainty remains.

MRI angiography is generally safe and noninvasive. It uses magnetic fields and radio waves, avoiding ionizing radiation. Gadolinium contrast is usually well tolerated but can rarely cause allergic reactions and, in people with severe kidney disease, nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. MRI may be unsuitable with certain metal implants or some pacemakers, and can cause discomfort from noise or claustrophobia. Discuss implant safety and kidney status with your doctor.

A brain MRI with angiography typically takes about 30–60 minutes for the scan itself. Simple non-contrast studies may be closer to 20–30 minutes; contrast-enhanced or detailed angiographic protocols often require 45–60 minutes. Allow extra time for safety screening, IV placement, and image processing—overall appointment time is usually 60–90 minutes. If sedation is needed, expect additional preparation and monitoring.

Brain MR angiography can detect cerebral aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations, assess arterial stenosis or occlusion (including carotid and intracranial arteries), identify dissections and atherosclerotic disease, evaluate vessels after ischemic stroke, and detect vasculitis or dural venous sinus thrombosis. It’s also used for pre- and post-treatment planning and monitoring of known vascular lesions.
