MRI Scan Brachial Plexus Contrast, in Navi Mumbai

Brachial plexus MRI does not always require contrast. Non‑contrast MR neurography (T1, T2, STIR/fat‑sat, 3D sequences) often suffices for traumatic nerve mapping. Gadolinium contrast is added when infection, inflammation or neoplasm is suspected, or to distinguish scar from recurrent tumor and assess enhancement. The decision depends on the clinical question and patient factors; the radiologist recommends contrast if it will change management.

MRI uses gadolinium-based contrast agents — paramagnetic gadolinium chelates given intravenously to enhance blood vessels, inflammation, tumors and lesion delineation. Agents are classified as macrocyclic or linear; macrocyclic types are more stable. They differ from iodine contrast used in CT. Kidney-function assessment is recommended because of a small risk of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis in severe renal impairment.

Yes. MRI with contrast (gadolinium) can reveal nerve inflammation, tumors, compressions and areas where the blood–nerve barrier is disrupted, making it useful for detecting many types of nerve injury (e.g., radiculopathy, neuritis, peripheral nerve lesions). However, it may not show microscopic axonal loss or subtle functional damage; nerve conduction studies/EMG and clinical assessment are often needed for definitive evaluation.

Cost for an MRI of the brachial plexus varies by country, facility and whether contrast or specialized neurography is needed. Typical out‑of‑pocket ranges: United States $800–$4,000; United Kingdom (private) £200–£1,000; India ₹3,000–₹15,000. Insured patients often pay only co‑pays or contracted rates. Check with your imaging center and insurer for exact pricing and requirements.

Contrast-enhanced MRI gives clearer images of tumors, infection, inflammation and blood-vessel problems, improving detection and characterization. Non-contrast MRI avoids gadolinium risks, is quicker and adequate for many musculoskeletal, neurological or follow-up studies. Choice depends on the clinical question and weighing benefits versus risks (kidney disease, pregnancy, allergy, gadolinium retention); your doctor or radiologist decides case-by-case.

Red flags for brachial plexus injury include severe shoulder/arm pain or burning/shooting pain, sudden weakness or paralysis of shoulder, arm, wrist, or fingers, numbness or loss of sensation in the arm/hand, absent or decreased reflexes, visible muscle weakness or drooping shoulder, and inability to perform hand movements. Immediate evaluation is required after trauma or birth injury.
