An MRI of the arm produces high-resolution images of bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, blood vessels and cartilage. It detects fractures missed on X-ray, tendon or muscle tears, nerve compression, inflammation, infections, tumors and degenerative changes. MRI distinguishes soft-tissue abnormalities, assesses bone marrow, and helps guide diagnosis, treatment planning and surgical decisions; contrast can improve detection of infection or tumor.

MRI cannot measure pain directly, but it can identify structural causes of arm pain—cervical nerve compression, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, rotator cuff tears, tendon or muscle injuries, joint inflammation, fractures or tumors. MRI is excellent for soft tissues and nerves, yet imaging findings must be correlated with symptoms and clinical exam because incidental abnormalities can be unrelated to the pain.

To get an MRI of the hand, bring your referral and arrive early. Remove all jewelry, watches, and metal; wear loose clothing or a gown. Tell staff about implants, pacemakers, pregnancy or allergies. The technologist will position your hand in a dedicated coil and immobilize it. Stay still; scans typically last 20–45 minutes. Contrast dye may be used if indicated; follow staff instructions.

MRI is better for detailed soft‑tissue imaging—brain, spinal cord, muscles, joints—and avoids ionizing radiation, but is slower, costlier, and may not suit patients with some metal implants or claustrophobia. CT is faster, widely available, superior for bone, lung, acute bleeding and trauma, but uses ionizing radiation. Which is better depends on the clinical question; clinicians choose the appropriate test.

Be concerned if an MRI shows a new mass, growing lesion, acute stroke, hemorrhage, infection/abscess, signs of malignancy (irregular contrast enhancement), or significant spinal cord/nerve compression. Worry sooner if you have new or worsening neurological symptoms—weakness, numbness, vision loss, seizures, severe headache, altered consciousness—or unexplained rapid symptom progression. Contact your referring physician promptly; go to the emergency department for sudden focal deficits or rapidly worsening signs.

Yes—MRI can visualize many nerves, especially with dedicated techniques (MR neurography) and contrast. It can show nerve anatomy, inflammation, compression, injuries, tumors and signal changes in peripheral nerves, the spinal cord and cranial nerves. Very small branches may be hard to resolve, and results depend on scanner strength, sequences and radiologist expertise. Electrophysiology or ultrasound can be complementary.
