MRI enteroclysis is an imaging test that combines small-bowel distension via a tube with MRI scanning to evaluate the small intestine. Fluid is infused through a nasojejunal tube to distend loops, then MRI (often with antispasmodic agents and intravenous contrast) produces high-resolution, radiation-free images to detect Crohn’s disease, strictures, tumors, fistulae, and obstruction.

Enteroclysis can be uncomfortable rather than severely painful. Inserting a thin tube through the nose into the small bowel often causes gagging, nasal and throat irritation, and mild anxiety. During contrast infusion patients may feel abdominal cramping, bloating or nausea. Local nasal anaesthetic, reassurance and occasional sedation reduce discomfort. Symptoms are generally temporary and most people tolerate the procedure without severe pain.

Enteroclysis is a specialized imaging test that evaluates the small intestine by delivering contrast directly into the jejunum through a thin tube passed nasally or orally, followed by fluoroscopy or CT imaging. It provides high-detail views to detect Crohn’s disease, strictures, tumors, obstructions, or malabsorption. The procedure may cause mild discomfort; fasting and bowel preparation are usually required.

Prepare by fasting for 4–6 hours and following any centre-specific bowel prep or laxative instructions. Tell staff about implants, pregnancy, kidney problems or allergies. Expect placement of a thin tube through the nose into the small bowel and infusion of contrast; you may receive an IV cannula for gadolinium and an anti-spasmodic. Remove metal jewelry, wear loose clothing, and allow extra time for the procedure.

Enteroclysis risks include radiation exposure and allergic reactions to iodinated or barium contrast. Patients may experience nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping or discomfort; rare but serious complications include bowel perforation, peritonitis, or infection. Contrast can worsen kidney dysfunction or trigger thyroid issues in susceptible individuals. Pregnancy and severe contrast allergies generally contraindicate the procedure; aspiration risk exists if vomiting occurs.

Recovery after MRI enterography is typically quick. It’s a noninvasive scan—most people resume normal activities and diet immediately afterward. Drink extra fluids to help clear any IV gadolinium contrast. Mild temporary effects may include bloating, nausea from oral contrast, or fatigue; allergic reactions are rare but possible. If IV contrast was used, you may be observed briefly; follow your care team's instructions.
