MRI Scan Abdomen Lower, in Navi Mumbai

An MRI of the lower abdomen evaluates soft tissues and organs in the pelvis—bladder, uterus, ovaries, prostate, bowel, blood vessels, lymph nodes and pelvic bones. It detects tumors, cysts, inflammation, abscesses, endometriosis, fistulas, hernias and congenital anomalies, and assesses vascular or post-surgical changes. It provides high-contrast, multiplanar images helpful for diagnosis, staging and treatment planning.

Costs vary widely by country and setting. In India expect about INR 2,000–8,000 at diagnostic centers; in the UK an MRI is free on the NHS but private scans typically cost £300–£700. In the US out‑of‑pocket charges commonly range from $400–$3,500 or more (higher with contrast or hospital billing). Final price depends on contrast use, facility, and insurance—check locally.

A lower abdominal (pelvic) MRI usually takes about 20–45 minutes for the scan itself. Including preparation, positioning and any contrast injection, the total appointment commonly lasts 30–60 minutes. Using intravenous contrast or additional sequences can extend the time by 10–20 minutes. Check with your imaging center for exact timing and details.

A pelvic MRI is generally not painful. The scan is non‑invasive; you may feel discomfort from lying still, a full bladder, or from claustrophobia and loud machine noises. An injected contrast can cause brief stinging or warmth; internal coils (rare) may cause pressure. Technologists provide cushions, ear protection and can offer sedation if needed. Report pain or anxiety at any time.

MRI can detect many abdominal problems by producing detailed images of soft tissues and organs. It is excellent for liver lesions, bile ducts (MRCP), pancreas, kidneys, adrenal glands, vessels, tumors, inflammation, abscesses and some bowel conditions (MR enterography). It avoids ionizing radiation and uses contrast for better detail, though bowel gas, calcifications and some implants limit usefulness. It is often used when ultrasound or CT are inconclusive.

If an MRI shows abnormal or concerning findings, your doctor will review and explain the results, recommend further tests (blood work, CT/PET, biopsy) or urgent treatment if needed, and refer you to a specialist. Management may include medication, surgery, therapy, or monitoring with repeat imaging. You can ask for a second opinion and should discuss risks, prognosis, and follow-up timing with your care team.
