MRI LS SPINE WITH WSS WITH CONTRAST

An LS spine MRI with WSS is an MRI focused on the lumbosacral (low back) region combined with a whole‑spine screening (WSS) sequence. It obtains dedicated lumbar images plus rapid sagittal images of the entire spine to look for additional lesions—metastases, infection, demyelination, or alignment issues—beyond the lumbar area. It’s noninvasive, uses magnetic fields (no ionizing radiation), and may use contrast if needed.

In MRI, WSS stands for Wall Shear Stress. It denotes the tangential force per unit area exerted by flowing blood on the vessel wall, estimated from velocity gradients measured with phase‑contrast and 4D flow MRI. WSS is used to assess hemodynamic forces implicated in vascular remodeling, atherosclerosis, aneurysm development and to inform clinical and research evaluations of cardiovascular disease.

Costs vary widely. In the United States a lumbar‑spine MRI with contrast commonly ranges roughly $1,000–$5,000 out‑of‑pocket; insured patients’ copays/out‑of‑pocket responsibility often fall around $100–$1,000 depending on coverage. In the United Kingdom the NHS provides scans free; private scans cost several hundred pounds. In India private centres typically charge around ₹3,000–₹10,000.

Spine MRI with contrast (gadolinium) highlights abnormal tissue by showing enhancement where the blood–spinal cord barrier is disrupted. It improves detection and characterization of tumors and metastases, infections and abscesses, active inflammatory or demyelinating lesions, nerve-root enhancement in radiculopathy, epidural disease and postoperative scar versus recurrent tumor. It also helps evaluate vascular malformations and assess lesion vascularity and extent.

Fasting is not usually required for an MRI of the lumbar spine. You can eat and drink normally unless the imaging center plans to give intravenous contrast or use sedation—then you may be asked to fast for a few hours (commonly 4–6 hours). Follow the specific prep instructions from the facility and tell staff about diabetes, allergies, implants or pregnancy.

Spine MRI can detect disc herniation and degeneration, spinal stenosis and nerve root or spinal cord compression, tumors (primary or metastatic), infections such as discitis or spinal abscess, inflammatory diseases like transverse myelitis or multiple sclerosis plaques, spinal cord cysts (syrinx), fractures with bone marrow edema, congenital malformations, and vascular malformations.
