An MRI of the clavicle evaluates the bone and surrounding soft tissues in detail. It detects occult or nonunion fractures, bone marrow edema, osteomyelitis, and primary or metastatic tumors. It assesses acromioclavicular and sternoclavicular joint pathology, ligament and muscle injuries, bursitis, and postoperative changes. MRI helps stage disease, guide treatment decisions, and monitor fracture healing or infection response.

MRI does not measure pain itself but is very useful for identifying causes of bone pain. It sensitively detects bone marrow changes (edema), occult or stress fractures, infections, tumors, avascular necrosis, and adjacent soft-tissue or nerve pathology. MRI is more sensitive than X-ray for early abnormalities, but imaging findings must be interpreted with clinical examination and other tests to determine the pain source.

To check your clavicles, sit or stand relaxed. Palpate the sternal end near the center of your chest, then trace each collarbone laterally toward the shoulder. Compare both sides for symmetry, swelling, deformity, tenderness, or grinding. Raise and lower your arms and shrug to assess pain or limited motion. Seek urgent care for severe pain, visible deformity, numbness, weakness, or breathing difficulty.

A CT scan of the clavicle is a specialized X‑ray test that produces detailed cross‑sectional images of the collarbone. It helps diagnose fractures, assess displacement or nonunion, detect infection or tumors, and evaluate complex shoulder‑girdle injuries. The scan is quick and may rarely use contrast; it provides better bone detail than plain X‑rays but involves higher radiation exposure.

Yes. MRI is highly sensitive for many bone injuries—especially bone marrow edema, occult or stress fractures, bone contusions, and infections—often detecting problems missed on X‑rays. It visualizes marrow and surrounding soft tissues well, making it excellent for early or subtle injuries. However, CT or X‑ray may better show fine cortical fracture lines when detailed bone architecture is needed.

Yes. Many clavicle fractures heal without a cast; they’re usually treated with a sling or figure‑of‑eight bandage, rest, pain control and gradual shoulder exercises. Most adults recover in about 6–12 weeks (children faster). Surgery is considered for markedly displaced, shortened, open, neurovascularly compromised, or nonunion fractures. Regular follow‑up and X‑rays guide care.
