It maps venous anatomy, detects thrombosis or narrowing, identifies congenital or acquired malformations, compression by tumors, and venous insufficiency. MRV helps confirm causes of headaches, stroke-like symptoms, swelling, or unexplained neurological signs and guides treatment planning without ionizing radiation.

A doctor orders a brain MRV to visualize cerebral veins and dural sinuses, primarily to detect venous sinus thrombosis, stenosis, or malformations that can cause severe headache, raised intracranial pressure (papilledema), seizures, focal neurological deficits, or stroke-like symptoms. It aids diagnosis, treatment planning, or follow-up of venous abnormalities and is used when venous pathology is suspected or other imaging is inconclusive.

A brain MRI scan typically takes 20 to 60 minutes for the imaging itself. Simple studies may finish in 15 to 30 minutes, while detailed or multi‑sequence exams can last up to an hour. If contrast dye is needed, add about 10 to 20 minutes for injection and waiting. Allow extra time for registration, safety screening and positioning, so plan on 30 to 90 minutes at the facility.
