MRI Brain Scan with MRA

A brain MRA (magnetic resonance angiography) is a specialized MRI that visualizes the brain’s blood vessels to detect aneurysms, stenosis, occlusions, arteriovenous malformations, and vascular changes after stroke. It’s noninvasive, uses magnetic fields and radio waves, often without contrast but sometimes with gadolinium to improve detail. There’s no ionizing radiation; gadolinium is avoided or used cautiously in severe kidney disease.

Cost of a brain MRA varies: in the US self-pay is typically $400–$3,000 depending on facility and contrast use; in the UK it’s free on the NHS but private scans usually cost about £300–£1,200; in India private centers charge roughly ₹2,000–₹15,000. Insurance often covers part or all—check local providers and whether contrast or radiologist fees are included.

A routine brain MRI typically takes about 20–45 minutes. A brain MRA adds roughly 10–30 minutes depending on technique (non-contrast time-of-flight vs contrast-enhanced). A combined MRI+MRA exam generally lasts 30–75 minutes total, including positioning, IV placement for contrast if used, image acquisition, and check-in. Times vary with scanner type, exam extent, and need for repeat sequences due to motion.

MRI produces detailed images of organs, tissues, bones and soft structures using magnetic fields and radio waves. Mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs) can cause hyperkalaemia and worsening kidney function, low blood pressure with dizziness, dehydration, gastrointestinal upset, fatigue and rash. Spironolactone often causes hormonal effects—gynecomastia, breast tenderness, menstrual changes and sexual dysfunction—while eplerenone has fewer endocrine side effects. MRA visualizes cerebral blood vessels, detecting stenosis, occlusion, aneurysms and vascular malformations that can cause brain injury. It does not directly show parenchymal brain damage — MRI sequences (DWI, FLAIR, T2, SWI) are used to detect infarcts, hemorrhage, and small‑vessel disease. Often MRA is combined with MRI to assess both vessel pathology and resulting brain tissue damage.
