What is a MIBG Scan Test in Madurai ?
What is MIBG Scan?
A MIBG scan uses a small amount of a radioactive drug called MIBG to see how certain nerve-related and hormone-producing cells take up that tracer. It shows where neuroendocrine cells or sympathetic nerves are active in the body.
What does MIBG Scan show?
This is important because many tumors of the adrenal glands and related nerves concentrate MIBG. Doctors use the scan to find, stage, and follow tumors such as pheochromocytoma, paraganglioma, and neuroblastoma. It can also show nerve activity in the heart. Results help guide surgery, targeted radiotherapy, and ongoing monitoring of disease or treatment response.
What symptoms suggest MIBG Scan may be needed?
MIBG Scan is generally requested as part of a imaging assessment. Doctors commonly investigate this area when someone reports localised pain, swelling, or injury, a lump or restricted movement, or an abnormal finding on an earlier test that needs to be examined directly. Whether MIBG Scan specifically is the right test depends on your history and what your doctor is looking for. GetVisit makes testing convenient in Madurai, with partner-lab slots and home collection offered in many areas including Arapalayam and Mattuthavani.
How is MIBG Scan done?
No needle or sample is involved. At an accredited imaging centre serving Arapalayam and Mattuthavani, Madurai, a radiographer performs the scan, which is painless and usually completed within 10 to 15 minutes. A qualified radiologist interprets the images and issues a report you can access on GetVisit. (Home collection does not apply to imaging.)
How accurate is MIBG Scan?
GetVisit partners only with accredited imaging centres in and around Arapalayam, Mattuthavani, and Madurai that use maintained, calibrated equipment and qualified radiographers. Every scan is interpreted by a qualified radiologist, and reports are accepted by hospital networks, specialists, and insurers across India.
Are there any risks to MIBG Scan?
A standard X-ray uses a very low dose of radiation considered safe for diagnostic use; ultrasound uses sound waves and involves no radiation at all. If you are or might be pregnant, tell the centre in Arapalayam or Mattuthavani, Madurai beforehand so the safest approach can be chosen. There is no needle and no recovery time.
Did you know?
A typical MIBG scan involves injection of a radioactive tracer followed by one or more imaging sessions.

Why Take a MIBG Scan Test in Madurai ?
When does a doctor order MIBG Scan?
MIBG Scan is a nuclear medicine imaging study often ordered when neuroendocrine tumors are suspected. It is used when symptoms like unexplained high blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, headaches, or an abdominal mass appear, and when doctors need to locate, stage, or follow tumors such as pheochromocytoma, paraganglioma, or neuroblastoma.
Who should get MIBG Scan done in Madurai?
Madurai's temple-city trade economy, rice-based diet driving high diabetes prevalence, intense summer heat, and northeast-monsoon infection season make regular preventive diagnostic testing a sound habit citywide. Imaging benefits patients with pain, swelling, a palpable lump, injury, or an abnormal earlier finding, as well as those monitoring a known condition. GetVisit helps residents of Arapalayam, Mattuthavani, and across Madurai book accredited imaging with clear pricing.
What can MIBG Scan help detect?
The conditions diagnosable through MIBG Scan depend on the specific markers the test measures. Results either confirm a suspected diagnosis, support a clinical suspicion requiring further investigation, or effectively exclude the condition the test was screening for. Abnormal results come from tumor uptake or from interfering medications and prior iodine exposure. A family history of inherited neuroendocrine tumors may make this scan especially important.
What do MIBG Scan results mean?
Findings are graded from normal to significant, and comparison with any previous scan shows whether a known finding is stable, improving, or progressing. Your doctor explains the report in the context of your symptoms. See the FAQs below for more detail on this scan.
How often should MIBG Scan be repeated?
For preventive screening with a normal baseline: annually for most adults above 35. For monitoring a known condition: at the interval your specialist recommends, typically every 3 to 6 months for active conditions and annually for stable, well-controlled ones.
What happens after your MIBG Scan results are ready?
You will be notified as soon as the laboratory releases your results, usually within 24 to 48 hours. Open the report in the GetVisit app to see each value beside its reference range, share it with your doctor in a tap, or book a specialist consultation to talk it through.
