Elemental mercury can irritate, and inorganic or organic mercury compounds in skin products can be absorbed, causing dermatitis, kidney damage and serious neurological effects. Mercury-containing cosmetics (for example, some skin‑lightening products) are hazardous and banned in many places. Avoid such products and seek medical advice if you suspect exposure.

High mercury levels mean significant exposure that can damage the nervous system, kidneys and heart. Symptoms include tremor, numbness or tingling, memory and concentration problems, mood changes, and—especially in pregnancy—harm to fetal brain development.
