What is a Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE) Test in Chennai ?
What is MAGNETIC RESONANCE ELASTOGRAPHY (MRE)?
Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE) measures how stiff tissues are inside the body. It uses an MRI machine plus gentle vibrations to map tissue stiffness. Stiffness is important because it often rises when organs develop scarring or fibrosis. It is one of the most commonly ordered blood tests worldwide and plays a key role in both preventive screening and the investigation of liver disease.
What does MAGNETIC RESONANCE ELASTOGRAPHY (MRE) measure?
MRE is most commonly used for the liver to detect and stage fibrosis and cirrhosis. It can reduce the need for invasive liver biopsy. Doctors use MRE to help diagnose liver disease, guide treatment choices, and monitor response over time. Results are reported in International Units per litre (U/L). Mild elevations (2–3× normal) typically indicate reversible changes. Values above 10× normal suggest acute injury requiring urgent investigation.
What symptoms suggest MAGNETIC RESONANCE ELASTOGRAPHY (MRE) may be needed?
A doctor may order MAGNETIC RESONANCE ELASTOGRAPHY (MRE) when a patient reports fatigue or persistent low energy, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark amber or tea-coloured urine, pale or clay-coloured stools, upper right abdominal discomfort, nausea, loss of appetite, abdominal swelling, and unexplained weight loss. In Chennai, residents of Thoraipakkam and Porur commonly present for this test after noticing these symptoms during a routine or preventive consultation.
How is MAGNETIC RESONANCE ELASTOGRAPHY (MRE) performed?
GetVisit home collection in Thoraipakkam or Porur, Chennai: a certified phlebotomist arrives at your address at your chosen slot (available from 6:00 AM), brings all sterile single-use equipment, collects the sample, and dispatches it to the NABL-accredited lab. Your digital report is delivered to your GetVisit profile the same day for most standard tests.
How accurate is MAGNETIC RESONANCE ELASTOGRAPHY (MRE)?
NABL-accredited laboratory results are analytically reliable. GetVisit's logistics network maintains cold-chain transport from collection to the processing lab, preserving sample integrity. Quality control is independently audited by NABL at regular intervals.
Are there any risks to MAGNETIC RESONANCE ELASTOGRAPHY (MRE)?
This is a low-risk procedure. The only intervention is the blood draw. Side effects are limited to a brief pinch and an occasional small bruise at the puncture site, which resolves in 24 to 48 hours without treatment. Patients on anticoagulants should hold light pressure for 3 to 5 minutes after the draw.
Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE) Test Preparation in Chennai

Carry your doctor's test order, a government-issued photo ID, and your OPD insurance card. If you have had this test before, bring previous reports , your doctor can compare results over time.
Timing:

Why Take a Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE) Test in Chennai ?
When does a doctor order MAGNETIC RESONANCE ELASTOGRAPHY (MRE)?
Doctors order MAGNETIC RESONANCE ELASTOGRAPHY (MRE) when a patient reports jaundice, dark urine, pale stools, persistent fatigue, nausea, or upper right abdominal pain. It is also routinely ordered before starting hepatotoxic medications (statins, anti-TB drugs, anticonvulsants) and periodically during their use.
Who should get MAGNETIC RESONANCE ELASTOGRAPHY (MRE) done in Chennai?
Hepatitis B prevalence in Tamil Nadu is estimated at around 3 to 4%. NAFLD is also rising rapidly among Chennai's large young professional population due to sedentary IT-sector jobs, high-carbohydrate diets, and rising obesity rates in areas like OMR and T Nagar. MAGNETIC RESONANCE ELASTOGRAPHY (MRE) is an imaging test usually ordered as part of liver assessment for patients with abnormal liver blood tests, fatty liver, or long-term hepatitis. It helps detect and stage fibrosis and cirrhosis and can monitor disease progression or treatment response. NAFLD affects an estimated 25 to 35% of India's urban adults , the majority unaware. Regular liver testing in Chennai's residential areas including Kodambakkam and Saidapet enables lifestyle intervention before irreversible scarring occurs. Patients recovering from hepatitis, those in alcohol recovery, and anyone with persistently unexplained fatigue also benefit from regular liver monitoring.
What conditions can MAGNETIC RESONANCE ELASTOGRAPHY (MRE) help diagnose?
Very high ALT and AST (10–50× normal) with normal ALP suggests acute hepatocellular injury , viral hepatitis, drug toxicity, or ischaemia. Predominantly elevated ALP and GGT with modest transaminases suggests bile duct obstruction or primary biliary cholangitis. An AST:ALT ratio above 2 suggests alcoholic hepatitis. Persistently low albumin with elevated bilirubin indicates advanced cirrhosis.
What do MAGNETIC RESONANCE ELASTOGRAPHY (MRE) results mean?
ALT above 56 U/L or AST above 40 U/L signals hepatocyte stress. The pattern matters: ALT greater than AST typically suggests NAFLD or viral hepatitis. An AST:ALT ratio above 2 points to alcoholic hepatitis. High ALP with normal transaminases suggests bile duct disease rather than liver cell damage. Low albumin alongside high bilirubin indicates serious loss of liver function.
How often should MAGNETIC RESONANCE ELASTOGRAPHY (MRE) be repeated?
Adults with no liver risk factors and a previously normal result: annually. Patients with NAFLD or treated hepatitis: every 6 months. Patients on hepatotoxic medication: baseline before starting, then at 1 month, 3 months, and every 6 months during treatment. Patients with active liver disease: at intervals specified by their gastroenterologist.
What happens after MAGNETIC RESONANCE ELASTOGRAPHY (MRE) results are ready?
Your GetVisit digital report is delivered to your phone as soon as results are authorised. Share it directly with your doctor via the app, or book a consultation with a GetVisit-verified specialist on the same platform. Critical values outside a safe range are flagged by the laboratory for urgent clinical review.
