What is liver kidney microsomal type 1 AB?

Liver kidney microsomal type 1 antibody (anti‑LKM‑1) is an autoantibody against the liver microsomal enzyme cytochrome P450 2D6. It’s a diagnostic marker for autoimmune hepatitis type 2, more common in children and young adults, and may signal severe or drug‑induced liver injury. Anti‑LKM‑1 can also appear in some viral hepatitis cases; diagnosis requires clinical, serological and often biopsy correlation.

What is the normal range for liver kidney microsomal ab?

Normal result for liver–kidney microsomal (LKM) antibodies is negative or undetectable. Labs usually report titers by immunofluorescence; values below the lab’s cutoff (commonly <1:40, though some use <1:20) are considered negative. Titers at or above the lab-specific positive threshold (for example ≥1:40) indicate LKM positivity and should be interpreted by a clinician in the clinical context.

What does a positive LKM test mean?

A positive LKM (liver–kidney microsomal) antibody test indicates an autoimmune reaction targeting liver cells, most often linked with autoimmune hepatitis (especially type 2). It suggests immune‑mediated liver injury and often accompanies abnormal liver enzymes. It’s not diagnostic alone — further evaluation (repeat blood tests, liver function tests, imaging, and sometimes biopsy) and specialist referral are needed to confirm diagnosis and start immunosuppressive treatment.

What is the cost of LKM antibody test?

Costs for the LKM (anti‑LKM) antibody test vary by country and lab. In the UK it’s generally provided free through the NHS; in India private testing commonly costs around INR 700–2,500. In the US and Canada private laboratory charges typically range from about $50–300, and can be higher if included in a broader autoimmune panel. Check local labs or insurers for exact pricing.

What is type 1 liver disease?

Type 1 autoimmune hepatitis is the commonest autoimmune liver disease in teens and adults, where the immune system attacks hepatocytes causing chronic inflammation. Symptoms include fatigue, jaundice, abdominal pain and raised liver enzymes. Diagnosis uses blood tests for autoantibodies (ANA, SMA), liver function tests and often biopsy. Treatment is immunosuppression (corticosteroids with azathioprine) to control inflammation and prevent cirrhosis.

LKM disease (Liver–Kidney Microsomal antibody–associated autoimmune hepatitis, type 2) is an autoimmune liver disorder in which antibodies—often against cytochrome P450 enzymes—attack hepatocytes, causing inflammation. It commonly affects children and young adults, causing jaundice, fatigue, and raised liver enzymes. Diagnosis uses serology and liver biopsy. Treatment is immunosuppression (corticosteroids ± azathioprine) to prevent progression to cirrhosis.

What is a Liver-Kidney Microsome-1 Ab (LKM 1) Test in Chennai ?

What is Liver-Kidney Microsome-1 Ab (LKM 1)?

The Liver-Kidney Microsome-1 antibody (LKM1) test detects specific antibodies the immune system makes against liver cell proteins. These antibodies target enzymes inside liver cells and can cause inflammation and damage. Finding LKM1 helps doctors identify autoimmune hepatitis type 2, which is more common in children and young adults. It is particularly important for people with diabetes or hypertension , the two leading causes of chronic kidney disease in India, responsible for over 60% of cases requiring dialysis.

What does Liver-Kidney Microsome-1 Ab (LKM 1) measure?

LKM1 can sometimes be seen with certain viral infections or drug-related liver injury. Doctors order the test when liver blood tests are abnormal or autoimmune liver disease is suspected. Results are used with symptoms, other antibody tests, immunoglobulin levels, imaging, and sometimes liver biopsy to confirm diagnosis, guide immunosuppressive treatment, and monitor disease activity or relapse over time. eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) is calculated from the creatinine value, age, and gender. It is a more informative indicator of kidney health than creatinine alone.

What symptoms suggest Liver-Kidney Microsome-1 Ab (LKM 1) may be needed?

A doctor may order Liver-Kidney Microsome-1 Ab (LKM 1) when a patient reports ankle or leg swelling, reduced urine output, frothy or foamy urine, persistent fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, persistent itching, muscle cramps, and high blood pressure. In Chennai, residents of Adyar and OMR commonly present for this test after noticing these symptoms during a routine or preventive consultation.

How is Liver-Kidney Microsome-1 Ab (LKM 1) performed?

Whether you visit a walk-in lab in Adyar or book home collection in OMR, Chennai, the process is the same. A trained phlebotomist performs a brief, sterile venipuncture, barcodes the sample for tracking, and dispatches it to the NABL lab. Your digital report is available in the GetVisit app the same day for most blood tests.

How accurate is Liver-Kidney Microsome-1 Ab (LKM 1)?

All GetVisit partner labs are NABL-accredited. NABL accreditation requires labs to use internationally calibrated reference standards, pass external quality assessments, and maintain internal quality control at every shift. Reports are accepted by all major hospital networks, specialists, and insurance providers in India.

Are there any risks to Liver-Kidney Microsome-1 Ab (LKM 1)?

This is a low-risk procedure. The only intervention is the blood draw. Side effects are limited to a brief pinch and an occasional small bruise at the puncture site, which resolves in 24 to 48 hours without treatment. Patients on anticoagulants should hold light pressure for 3 to 5 minutes after the draw.

Liver-Kidney Microsome-1 Ab (LKM 1) Test Preparation in Chennai

Fasting and dietary instructions:

No fasting required. Eat and drink normally before the appointment. Stay well hydrated , drink 2 to 3 glasses of water before the draw. Avoid alcohol and vigorous exercise for 12 hours before collection.

Medication guidance:

If you take NSAIDs (ibuprofen, diclofenac) or ACE inhibitors, inform your doctor. These can transiently elevate creatinine and your doctor may advise a brief pause if clinically safe.

What to bring:

Bring your doctor's prescription or test requisition, a valid photo ID, and your corporate health insurance card if using cashless OPD. Wear short sleeves or clothing with sleeves that roll up easily.

Timing:

Book the earliest available morning slot. For fasting tests, an overnight fast followed by a morning draw represents the optimal balance between adequate fasting duration and test accuracy.

Why Take a Liver-Kidney Microsome-1 Ab (LKM 1) Test in Chennai ?

When does a doctor order Liver-Kidney Microsome-1 Ab (LKM 1)?

Liver-Kidney Microsome-1 Ab (LKM 1) is ordered when a doctor needs objective laboratory data to confirm a diagnosis, follow up a previously abnormal result, or complete a pre-operative assessment.

Who should get Liver-Kidney Microsome-1 Ab (LKM 1) done in Chennai?

Chennai's April-to-June heat , regularly reaching 40 to 42°C , creates significant dehydration risk even for indoor workers in OMR and Sholinganallur. The city records high rates of kidney stones and acute kidney stress. Annual kidney function testing is strongly recommended for adults above 30. Liver-Kidney Microsome-1 Ab (LKM 1) is often part of an autoimmune liver panel used when patients have abnormal liver enzymes, jaundice, fatigue, or unexplained liver inflammation. Doctors order it to help diagnose autoimmune hepatitis type 2, distinguish causes of liver injury, and monitor treatment response. Those who benefit most from regular Liver-Kidney Microsome-1 Ab (LKM 1) testing include adults above 40, people with sedentary lifestyles or BMI above 25, those managing chronic conditions, smokers, and anyone whose previous result was borderline. Early detection through regular testing in Chennai is consistently more cost-effective than treating advanced disease.

What conditions can Liver-Kidney Microsome-1 Ab (LKM 1) help diagnose?

The conditions diagnosable through Liver-Kidney Microsome-1 Ab (LKM 1) depend on the specific markers the test measures. Results either confirm a suspected diagnosis, support a clinical suspicion requiring further investigation, or effectively exclude the condition the test was screening for.

What do Liver-Kidney Microsome-1 Ab (LKM 1) results mean?

Creatinine above 1.2 mg/dL (women) or 1.4 mg/dL (men): reduced kidney filtration. eGFR above 90: normal. eGFR 60–89: mildly reduced , monitor annually. eGFR 45–59: moderately reduced , nephrology referral advised. eGFR below 30: severely reduced , requires active nephrology management. Blood urea above 40 mg/dL alongside elevated creatinine confirms chronic kidney disease.

How often should Liver-Kidney Microsome-1 Ab (LKM 1) be repeated?

For preventive screening with a normal baseline: annually for most adults above 35. For monitoring a known condition: at the interval your specialist recommends , typically every 3 to 6 months for active conditions and annually for stable, well-controlled ones.

What happens after Liver-Kidney Microsome-1 Ab (LKM 1) results are ready?

Once your results appear in your GetVisit profile, discuss them with your doctor or a GetVisit-verified specialist. Your doctor will interpret each value in the context of your full health history, current medications, and symptoms , and advise on the next step: lifestyle change, repeat testing, medication adjustment, or specialist referral. All GetVisit reports are stored permanently and can be shared with any doctor instantly.
