Liver Fibroscan

FibroScan (transient elastography) is a quick, non‑invasive ultrasound test that measures liver stiffness to assess fibrosis and includes a CAP score to estimate fatty change. Performed with a probe over the ribs, it’s painless, takes minutes, and gives numeric scores used to stage liver disease and monitor treatment. Accuracy can be reduced by obesity, inflammation, or ascites, so results are interpreted with clinical context.

Bad FibroScan results include markedly increased liver stiffness—suggesting significant fibrosis or cirrhosis—and high controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) values indicating moderate-to-severe fatty liver. Equivocal or failed readings (common with obesity or ascites) are also problematic. These findings usually prompt blood tests, specialist referral, further imaging or biopsy, and consideration of treatment and lifestyle changes.

FibroScan costs vary by country and setting. In public systems it is often covered; in private clinics typical fees are roughly: US $100–700; UK £100–400; India ₹2,500–6,000; Australia A$100–300. Exact pricing depends on facility, city and whether follow-up/consultation is included — check with local providers or insurers for final cost and coverage.

A normal liver FibroScan (liver stiffness) is generally below about 6–7 kPa; values under this range typically indicate little or no fibrosis. Readings above ~8 kPa suggest significant fibrosis and values above ~12–14 kPa suggest cirrhosis. Cutoffs can vary by device and patient factors (inflammation, obesity); your clinician will interpret results in context.

A FibroScan is generally painless and non‑invasive. During the brief (about 5–10 minute) exam you may feel slight vibrations or light tapping on the chest/abdomen, but no needles or incisions are used. Some people with rib or liver tenderness may experience mild discomfort. There’s no recovery time, and most people can resume normal activity immediately.

Liver fibrosis is serious because it’s progressive scarring that can impair liver function. Early-stage fibrosis may be halted or partially reversed with treatment and lifestyle change, but advanced fibrosis can progress to cirrhosis, portal hypertension, liver failure and increased risk of liver cancer, raising morbidity and mortality; advanced disease may require transplant and close medical management.
