Lactate Dehyderogenase (LDH)-CSF(1ml)

Not necessarily—LDH is a non‑specific marker of tissue injury. Mild elevations can result from infections, muscle strain, liver issues, hemolysis or even recent exercise and often resolve. Results must be interpreted with symptoms and other tests (CBC, liver enzymes, imaging). If LDH is markedly high, rising, or accompanied by fever, severe pain, jaundice, breathlessness or unexplained weight loss, see your clinician promptly.

High CSF lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) indicates central nervous system tissue injury or increased blood–brain barrier permeability. Elevated CSF LDH occurs with bacterial meningitis, encephalitis, cerebral infarction, intracerebral hemorrhage, brain tumors, abscesses, or recent seizures. Markedly raised levels favor destructive or bacterial processes over viral causes and usually reflect more severe CNS damage; correlate with clinical findings and other CSF tests.

Many cancers can raise LDH, especially those with high tumor burden or rapid cell turnover. Common causes include aggressive lymphomas and leukemias, germ‑cell (testicular) tumors, metastatic melanoma, lung cancer, renal cell carcinoma, hepatocellular carcinoma or liver metastases, and advanced colorectal, pancreatic, ovarian and other metastatic solid tumors. Elevated LDH often reflects tumor burden, tissue necrosis or liver involvement.

High LDH (lactate dehydrogenase) is a nonspecific marker of tissue damage and can be raised in many conditions — infections, liver disease, hemolysis, cancer, and more. Elevated LDH alone does not mean you have tuberculosis. TB diagnosis requires clinical assessment, imaging, and microbiological tests (sputum/pleural fluid microscopy, culture or PCR). Discuss abnormal results with your healthcare provider for appropriate follow‑up.

High LDH isn’t treated directly; care targets the underlying cause. Clinicians investigate (blood tests, imaging) then treat the specific condition—antibiotics for infections, immunosuppression or transfusion for hemolysis, cancer-directed therapy (surgery/chemotherapy/radiation), liver or muscle injury management, stop offending drugs, or cardiac reperfusion for MI. Supportive measures (hydration, rest) and repeat LDH monitoring assess response.

LDH is an enzyme released when cells are damaged. Physical stressors—intense exercise, trauma, surgery, infection, or heart/liver injury—commonly raise LDH. Emotional or chronic psychological stress alone usually does not cause significant LDH increases, though severe physiological stress (shock, sepsis) can. Elevated LDH should prompt evaluation for underlying tissue injury or disease rather than stress alone.
