What stage of liver disease is ascites?

Ascites is a hallmark of decompensated liver disease—usually advanced cirrhosis due to portal hypertension and impaired liver function. It marks progression from compensated to decompensated cirrhosis and typically reflects more severe stages (worse Child‑Pugh and higher MELD scores). Its appearance requires prompt medical assessment and management to address complications and underlying liver failure.

What does malignant ascites look like?

Malignant ascites causes progressive abdominal distension with a tense, fluid-filled belly. On exam there is shifting dullness and a positive fluid wave. The fluid often appears straw‑colored, cloudy, blood‑tinged or milky (chylous) depending on tumor type. Patients commonly have early satiety, breathlessness and weight loss; imaging may show peritoneal nodules or omental caking indicating cancer spread.

Lactate Dehyderogenase (LDH) Ascitic Fluid (1ml), in Agra

Q: What level of LDH indicates lymphoma?

There’s no single LDH cutoff that proves lymphoma. Any value above your laboratory’s upper limit is a nonspecific red flag; clinicians use elevated LDH as a prognostic marker. Levels roughly two times the upper limit (for example >500 U/L when the normal upper limit is ~250 U/L) often indicate high tumor burden or more aggressive disease and prompt further investigation.

This test measures lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in ascitic fluid, the fluid that collects in the belly. What is a Lactate Dehyderogenase (LDH) Ascitic Fluid (1ml) Test in Agra ?

What is Lactate Dehyderogenase (LDH) Ascitic Fluid (1ml)?

This test measures lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in ascitic fluid, the fluid that collects in the belly. LDH is an enzyme found in many cells. It is one of the most commonly ordered blood tests worldwide and plays a key role in both preventive screening and the investigation of liver disease.

What does LDH measure?

High LDH in fluid usually means cells are damaged or dying. Measuring LDH helps doctors tell if fluid is a simple transudate (from heart or liver failure) or an exudate (from infection, inflammation, or cancer). It helps detect peritonitis, liver disease complications, cancer spread, and pancreatitis. Doctors use LDH along with other fluid tests, cultures, and imaging.

What symptoms suggest LDH may be needed?

LDH is generally requested as part of a liver function assessment. Doctors commonly investigate this area when someone reports fatigue or persistent low energy, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark amber or tea-coloured urine, pale or clay-coloured stools, upper right abdominal discomfort, nausea, loss of appetite, abdominal swelling, and unexplained weight loss. Whether LDH specifically is the right test depends on your history and what your doctor is looking for. Sample collection for Agra is available at partner labs, with home collection in many areas including Avas Vikas Colony and Civil Lines; you can confirm availability for your address at booking.

How is LDH performed?

This test is performed on a swab or fluid sample collected by a trained healthcare professional, not on a routine blood draw. Collection is quick and done at a GetVisit-partnered lab or collection point in Avas Vikas Colony or Civil Lines, Agra, after which the sample is dispatched to the NABL-accredited lab for processing.

How accurate is LDH?

Samples collected in Avas Vikas Colony or Civil Lines, Agra are processed at NABL-accredited labs using validated methods and internal quality control. Accuracy depends on correct collection technique by a trained professional, which GetVisit's partnered centres follow. Reports are accepted by hospitals, specialists, and insurers across India.

Are there any risks to LDH?

Risk is minimal. Swab, sputum, or fluid collection by a trained professional in Avas Vikas Colony or Civil Lines, Agra may cause brief, mild discomfort but no lasting effects. Any specific precaution for your test will be explained at the collection centre.

Did you know?

A high LDH level in ascitic (peritoneal) fluid is generally considered when fluid LDH exceeds about 200 IU/L or the ascites-to-serum LDH ratio is >0.6.

Why Take a Lactate Dehyderogenase (LDH) Ascitic Fluid (1ml) Test in Agra ?

When does a doctor order Lactate Dehyderogenase (LDH) Ascitic Fluid (1ml)?

Lactate Dehyderogenase (LDH) Ascitic Fluid (1ml) is usually included with routine ascitic fluid analysis (cell count, protein, albumin/SAAG, culture, and cytology). Doctors order it when patients have abdominal swelling, pain, fever, or unexplained weight changes.

Who should get LDH done in Agra?

Agra's tourism and leather-industry workforce, monsoon waterborne-infection burden, severe winter air pollution, extreme summer heat, and rising diabetes make regular preventive diagnostic testing worthwhile across the city. Regular liver testing benefits: regular alcohol drinkers, individuals with BMI above 28, anyone on long-term medication including statins or anti-TB drugs, people with a personal or family history of hepatitis B or C, those with type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome, and all adults above 40 in annual preventive panels. In Agra, residents of Avas Vikas Colony, Civil Lines, and similar areas with sedentary lifestyles and calorie-dense diets face particularly elevated metabolic liver risk.

What conditions can LDH help diagnose?

It helps distinguish fluid caused by liver or heart failure from fluid caused by infection, inflammation, or cancer. Abnormal results come from infections, malignancy, pancreatitis, or severe liver disease. A family history of liver disease or cancers may make this test more important.

What do LDH results mean?

Higher or positive results: A high LDH level in ascitic (peritoneal) fluid is generally considered when fluid LDH exceeds about 200 IU/L or the ascites-to-serum LDH ratio is >0.6. Your doctor reads the value against the reference range on your report and your symptoms, and may repeat a borderline result to confirm it.

How often should LDH be repeated?

Adults with no liver risk factors and a previously normal result: annually. Patients with NAFLD or treated hepatitis: every 6 months. Patients on hepatotoxic medication: baseline before starting, then at 1 month, 3 months, and every 6 months during treatment. Patients with active liver disease: at intervals specified by their gastroenterologist.

What happens after your LDH results are ready?

After the lab authorises your results, the report is uploaded to your GetVisit account and saved for future comparison. If anything falls outside the expected range, your doctor can advise whether it needs a repeat test, a lifestyle change, or a specialist opinion.

Frequently asked questions

For any unanswered questions, reach out to our support team via email. We will assist you as soon as possible

What is a high LDH level in ascitic fluid?

A high LDH level in ascitic (peritoneal) fluid is generally considered when fluid LDH exceeds about 200 IU/L or the ascites-to-serum LDH ratio is >0.6. Such elevations suggest exudative processes, infection (including bacterial peritonitis), malignancy, or significant inflammation, rather than simple cirrhotic transudate, and prompt further diagnostic workup (cultures, cytology, imaging).

What if the LDH level is high?

If LDH (lactate dehydrogenase) is high, it indicates tissue damage or cell breakdown but is nonspecific. Causes include hemolysis, liver disease, heart attack, muscle injury, infections, or some cancers. Your clinician will repeat tests, review symptoms and other labs (e.g. AST, ALT, CK, troponin, bilirubin) and may order imaging or targeted tests. Treatment addresses the underlying cause; follow up promptly with your provider.

What is the normal range for lactate dehydrogenase fluid?

Normal LDH in body fluids varies by site. Pleural and peritoneal (ascitic) fluid LDH is typically low, generally <200 U/L or below two‑thirds of the upper serum LDH limit. Cerebrospinal fluid LDH is much lower, usually under ~20 U/L. Serum LDH is about 140-280 U/L; fluid interpretation commonly compares fluid LDH to serum (e.g. Light’s criteria for pleural effusions).

What level of LDH indicates lymphoma?

There’s no single LDH cutoff that proves lymphoma. Any value above your laboratory’s upper limit is a nonspecific red flag; clinicians use elevated LDH as a prognostic marker. Levels roughly two times the upper limit (for example >500 U/L when the normal upper limit is ~250 U/L) often indicate high tumor burden or more aggressive disease and prompt further investigation.

Can I take my diabetes medication before Lactate Dehyderogenase (LDH) Ascitic Fluid (1ml)?

If you take insulin or diabetes tablets and are fasting for Lactate Dehyderogenase (LDH) Ascitic Fluid (1ml), ask your doctor whether to delay the dose until after the sample is collected, to avoid a low-sugar episode.

Can menstruation affect Lactate Dehyderogenase (LDH) Ascitic Fluid (1ml) results?

Some tests, such as iron studies and certain hormone panels, can be influenced by your menstrual cycle. If you are on your period, mention it so your doctor can judge whether timing matters for Lactate Dehyderogenase (LDH) Ascitic Fluid (1ml).
