HSG Test

An HSG often causes cramping or sharp pelvic pain when the dye is injected; discomfort typically peaks during the procedure and eases within hours. Some women have only mild soreness, while others report severe cramping, lightheadedness or shoulder pain from dye. Spotting and mild fever are uncommon. Over-the-counter painkillers, a cervical anesthetic, or short-acting sedation can reduce discomfort.

An HSG doesn’t guarantee pregnancy, but in some women—especially those with partial tubal blockage—the procedure’s dye can briefly increase conception chances, often within the first few menstrual cycles (effects stronger with oil-based contrast). You can usually try to conceive immediately after if there are no complications, but follow your clinic’s advice and treat any infection. Discuss results and timing with your doctor.

Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is an X-ray test using contrast dye to assess the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes. It detects uterine shape abnormalities (polyps, fibroids, congenital anomalies), intrauterine scarring or adhesions, and tubal patency or blockages (including hydrosalpinx). It helps evaluate causes of infertility, recurrent miscarriage, and complications after uterine or tubal surgery.

The best time for a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is in the first half of the menstrual cycle, typically days 6–12 (after bleeding stops but before ovulation). This timing reduces the chance of interrupting an early pregnancy and gives clearer imaging. Avoid HSG if pregnancy or active pelvic infection is suspected; treat infections first and confirm non‑pregnant status before scheduling.

Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is primarily a diagnostic X‑ray to assess uterus and fallopian tube patency. In some cases the pressure of contrast can dislodge minor proximal debris and temporarily restore patency, but it does not reliably clear distal or significant blockages. If HSG doesn’t open tubes, further evaluation and treatments (laparoscopy, tubal surgery or IVF) may be recommended. Risks include infection and contrast reactions.

A hysterosalpingogram (HSG) usually takes about 10–30 minutes from start to finish. The actual X‑ray imaging and contrast injection typically last only a few minutes (often 5–10), while the remainder covers preparation, positioning and brief recovery. Plan for about half an hour at the clinic to allow for consent, explanation, and possible short observation afterward.
