HRCT thorax (high-resolution CT of the chest) produces detailed cross-sectional images of the lungs and airways. It’s used to detect and characterise lung conditions such as interstitial lung disease, pulmonary fibrosis, bronchiectasis, emphysema, small nodules, scarring, and certain infections. It helps assess disease extent, monitor progression or treatment response, and guide clinical decisions or further testing.

HRCT thorax (high-resolution CT) uses very thin slices and lung-window reconstructions without contrast to detail lung parenchyma—ideal for interstitial lung disease, bronchiectasis, emphysema and subtle airways disease (often with inspiratory and expiratory scans). It’s useful for assessing extent and complications and when chest X-ray is inconclusive, but imaging alone cannot definitively diagnose TB. Microbiological confirmation (sputum smear/culture or molecular tests) is required for diagnosis and treatment decisions.

High-resolution CT (HRCT) of the chest is generally safe and valuable for diagnosing lung disease, but it uses ionizing radiation—exposure is higher than a chest X‑ray. Risk of radiation-induced cancer is small but cumulative; special precautions apply for pregnant people and children. For an HRCT thorax, wear comfortable, loose clothing without metal fastenings (zippers, buttons) and avoid jewelry, belts, metal hair clips, or underwire bras.
