Temporal bone axial and coronal refer to CT imaging planes used to visualize inner and middle ear anatomy. Axial slices run horizontally and detail the cochlea, semicircular canals, ossicles and internal auditory canal. Coronal slices run vertically (front to back) and better show mastoid air cells, otic capsule, facial nerve canal and tympanic cavity. Both planes help diagnose infections, trauma, cholesteatoma and congenital anomalies.

High-resolution CT (HRCT) of the temporal bone is a specialized CT scan that obtains very thin-slice, high-detail images of bony ear structures. It assesses outer, middle and inner ear anatomy—ossicles, cochlea, semicircular canals and mastoid air cells—and aids diagnosis of chronic infections, cholesteatoma, congenital anomalies, fractures, and preoperative planning for ear surgery or implants. The test is noninvasive, quick, and uses ionizing radiation.

Axial (transverse) scans produce cross-sectional images parallel to the ground, slicing the body into top and bottom—commonly used to view internal organs and the brain in successive slices. Coronal scans produce vertical slices dividing front (anterior) and back (posterior), showing structures in a frontal view. Each plane highlights different anatomical relationships and aids diagnosis and surgical planning.

Coronal (frontal) MRI slices vertically from ear to ear, giving front-to-back views that better show hippocampi, temporal lobes, pituitary and facial/skull-base anatomy. Both are complementary; radiologists use multiple planes to localize lesions, define extent, and plan treatment or surgery.
