Temporal bone HRCT is a high-resolution computed tomography scan focused on the temporal bones to produce thin-slice, detailed images of the ear’s bony anatomy. It assesses outer, middle and inner ear structures (ossicles, cochlea, semicircular canals, facial nerve canal) for fractures, chronic infection, cholesteatoma, congenital anomalies or surgical planning. It’s a noninvasive, outpatient imaging test guiding diagnosis and treatment.

An HRCT temporal bone is ordered to precisely evaluate the complex bony anatomy of the ear. It provides high‑resolution, submillimetre images for detecting cholesteatoma, chronic otitis media, ossicular chain problems, otosclerosis, congenital malformations, temporal bone fractures and tumors, and for cochlear implant or mastoid surgery planning. MRI is often used alongside HRCT when soft‑tissue or neural assessment is needed.

Temporal bone problems can cause ear pain, persistent or foul-smelling ear discharge, and hearing loss (conductive or sensorineural). Other signs include swelling or tenderness behind the ear, visible mass, or clear fluid leaking from the ear.

An HRCT of the temporal bones is very quick: the actual image acquisition usually takes only a few minutes (often under 5–10 minutes). With positioning, instructions and any contrast setup, the full appointment typically lasts about 20–45 minutes.
