HRCT Scan Chest

A HRCT (high-resolution computed tomography) chest scan produces detailed, thin-slice images of the lungs and airways to detect and characterise lung disease. It helps diagnose interstitial lung disease, pulmonary fibrosis, bronchiectasis, emphysema, small nodules and some infections, and to evaluate unexplained breathlessness, persistent cough or abnormal chest X-rays. It’s usually noninvasive and often performed without contrast.

HRCT chest is generally safe but involves ionizing radiation, giving a small increased lifetime cancer risk, especially with repeated scans. If contrast dye is used, possible allergic reactions, contrast-induced kidney injury, and injection-site pain or swelling may occur. Temporary discomfort from lying still, claustrophobia or anxiety is possible. Pregnant women should avoid it unless essential.

High-resolution CT (HRCT) can show patterns suggestive of pulmonary tuberculosis — cavitation, tree-in-bud nodules, consolidation, bronchiectasis, lymph node enlargement or miliary nodules — and helps assess disease extent and complications. However, HRCT cannot definitively diagnose TB or reliably distinguish active from healed disease. Microbiological confirmation (sputum smear/culture or molecular tests) is essential; imaging guides sampling and management.

A doctor may order a chest CT to get detailed images of the lungs, heart and blood vessels to diagnose or assess pneumonia, lung cancer, pulmonary embolism, chronic lung diseases (COPD, interstitial lung disease), pleural disease, or trauma. It helps clarify abnormal chest X‑rays, stage tumors, plan surgery or procedures, and monitor treatment or disease progression when precise anatomical detail is needed.

High-resolution CT (HRCT) is excellent for detecting interstitial lung diseases—pulmonary fibrosis (including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and nonspecific interstitial pneumonia), hypersensitivity pneumonitis, sarcoidosis and pneumoconioses—plus bronchiectasis, emphysema/COPD, small-airways disease (bronchiolitis/air‑trapping), cystic lung disorders (e.g., LAM, LCH), organizing pneumonia, alveolar proteinosis and many infections. It also helps characterize nodules and suspected malignancy.

Cost of a high-resolution CT (HRCT) varies by country and facility: in the US it commonly ranges from about $300–$1,500 (higher for hospital or contrast studies), in the UK private scans typically cost £150–£400 while NHS patients usually receive it free, and in India prices often range from about ₹2,000–₹8,000. Final price depends on location, facility, and use of contrast.
