HMPV - Human metapneumovirus, in Navi Mumbai

Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) usually causes mild cold-like illness but can be serious in infants, older adults, and immunocompromised people. It can progress to bronchiolitis or pneumonia, sometimes requiring hospitalization or oxygen support; mortality is uncommon in healthy adults but higher in high-risk groups. Treatment is mainly supportive; severe cases need medical care. Good hygiene and avoiding sick contacts reduce spread.

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is usually managed with supportive care: rest, fluids, fever reducers (acetaminophen/ibuprofen), saline nasal drops and suctioning for infants, humidified air, and good hydration. Antibiotics aren’t effective unless a bacterial complication occurs. Isolate to avoid spreading and practice hand hygiene. Seek medical care for difficulty breathing, high fever, dehydration, or if you’re very young, elderly, or immunocompromised; severe cases may need oxygen or hospital care.

HMPV (human metapneumovirus) is a common respiratory virus causing upper and lower airway infections, particularly in infants, young children, older adults and immunocompromised people. Symptoms range from mild cold-like signs—runny nose, sore throat, cough, fever and wheeze—to more severe illness with shortness of breath, bronchiolitis or pneumonia. Symptoms usually appear a few days after exposure.

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) incubation is typically 3–6 days. Symptoms usually last about 1–2 weeks, though cough or fatigue can linger for several more weeks. Children and immunocompromised people may shed virus and stay symptomatic longer (sometimes 2–3+ weeks); adults often recover faster. Severe cases can persist and require medical care—seek help if breathing worsens or symptoms significantly worsen.

Yes, adults can catch human metapneumovirus (HMPV). It causes respiratory infections across all ages; symptoms often resemble a cold but can be severe in older adults, people with chronic conditions, or the immunocompromised. HMPV spreads via respiratory droplets and contact, and reinfections are common. Prevention focuses on hygiene and avoiding close contact; treatment is mainly supportive, with hospitalization for severe cases.

Most people recover from human metapneumovirus (HMPV), but long-term effects can include persistent cough, wheeze or reactive airway disease and increased risk of recurrent respiratory infections. In infants and people with underlying lung disease or weakened immunity, HMPV may contribute to chronic airway hyperreactivity, reduced lung function or prolonged viral shedding; severe infections can accelerate existing chronic lung disease.
