HLA - B5 (b*51/52)

HLA-B51 positive means a person carries the HLA-B51 human leukocyte antigen allele. It indicates increased genetic susceptibility to Behçet’s disease but is not diagnostic by itself. It’s more common in some ethnic groups and may be linked with higher risk of certain complications (for example, eye involvement). Clinicians interpret it alongside symptoms and other tests when evaluating patients.

A positive HLA‑B5 result means you carry a specific HLA genetic marker that is associated with increased susceptibility to Behçet’s disease. It is not diagnostic on its own—many carriers never develop the condition. Clinical symptoms (recurrent oral/genital ulcers, eye inflammation, skin lesions) and specialist assessment are required. HLA‑B52 is not a direct cause but is strongly associated with increased risk of certain autoimmune conditions—most notably Takayasu arteritis (especially in East Asian populations) and ulcerative colitis. It’s also linked to higher susceptibility to some other autoimmune vasculitides and inflammatory bowel disease phenotypes. Presence of HLA‑B52 indicates genetic predisposition, not certainty of developing these diseases.

HLA-B*51 is strongly associated with Behçet’s disease: individuals carrying this allele have higher risk of developing recurrent oral and genital ulcers, uveitis, skin lesions and systemic vasculitis. The allele correlates with increased susceptibility and often more severe or ocular-involving disease, particularly in populations along the historic Silk Road. It is a genetic risk factor, not a definitive diagnostic marker.

HLA‑B positive means a person carries one or more HLA‑B antigens (class I human leukocyte antigen) on their cells.
