HLA B-27 (Qualitative)

The HLA‑B27 test detects a specific genetic marker (HLA‑B27 antigen) in blood. It helps support diagnosis of certain inflammatory conditions — most commonly ankylosing spondylitis, reactive arthritis, some forms of psoriatic arthritis and acute anterior uveitis — when symptoms and imaging suggest them. A positive result raises likelihood but is not definitive; many healthy people carry HLA‑B27 and some patients are negative.

HLA-B27 qualitative PCR detected means the PCR test found the HLA-B27 gene variant; it reports presence, not quantity. This allele is linked to an increased risk of spondyloarthropathies (for example ankylosing spondylitis, reactive arthritis, some uveitis), but many carriers remain healthy. A positive result isn’t diagnostic alone—clinical correlation and rheumatology assessment are recommended if symptomatic.

Being HLA‑B27 positive increases your risk of certain inflammatory conditions—most commonly ankylosing spondylitis and acute anterior uveitis—and is associated with reactive arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and IBD‑related arthritis. It is not a diagnosis: many carriers remain healthy. If you have persistent back pain, joint symptoms or eye inflammation, seek medical evaluation for early diagnosis, monitoring and treatment to reduce complications; consider genetic counseling.

HLA‑B27 doesn’t have a numeric “normal range.” The test is reported as positive (present) or negative (absent). A positive result means you carry the HLA‑B27 antigen, which increases the likelihood of spondyloarthropathies (e.g., ankylosing spondylitis) but is not diagnostic—many carriers are healthy. Results must be interpreted with symptoms and clinical evaluation; further testing may be needed.

HLA‑B27 positivity itself isn’t a disease and usually needs no treatment. Treatment is only directed at associated conditions (like ankylosing spondylitis, reactive arthritis, or uveitis). Management may include NSAIDs, physiotherapy, disease‑modifying drugs or biologics and specialist follow‑up when symptoms occur. Many carriers remain healthy; seek evaluation for persistent back pain, joint problems, or eye inflammation.
