HIV 1 AND 2 AND P24 COMBO, in Pimpri Chinchwad

The HIV‑1/2 p24 combo test is a fourth‑generation blood immunoassay that detects HIV‑1 p24 antigen plus antibodies to HIV‑1 and HIV‑2. Because p24 appears before antibodies, it shortens the diagnostic window (typically about 2–6 weeks after exposure). It’s used for routine screening; reactive results require confirmatory testing (nucleic acid testing or supplemental antibody differentiation).

No — HIV‑2 does not have the HIV‑1 p24 antigen. HIV‑2’s core capsid protein is p26, which is antigenically distinct from HIV‑1 p24. Many fourth‑generation tests detect p24 for early HIV‑1 infection and may be less sensitive for HIV‑2; diagnosis of HIV‑2 relies on antibody detection and specific confirmatory assays that identify p26/HIV‑2.

HIV p24 antigen can sometimes be detected by about 10–14 days after exposure, but detection at exactly 14 days isn’t guaranteed. p24 typically peaks around 3–4 weeks and may decline as antibodies form. Fourth‑generation antigen/antibody tests become much more reliable by 3–6 weeks; nucleic acid (RNA) testing detects infection earliest. Repeat testing at 4–12 weeks is recommended.

An HIV combo (4th‑generation) test is qualitative: a non‑reactive (negative) result means no HIV p24 antigen or antibodies detected; a reactive (positive) result indicates antigen/antibodies and needs confirmatory testing. Many assays use a signal‑to‑cutoff (S/CO) with <1.0 considered negative and ≥1.0 reactive. Window period: ~2–6 weeks for p24, up to 3 months for antibodies—repeat if exposure was recent.

No HIV test is 100% accurate. Fourth‑generation laboratory antigen/antibody tests are highly sensitive and specific and detect most infections by about 4–6 weeks; nucleic acid (RNA) tests detect infection earlier but are also not perfect. Positive results require confirmatory testing, and repeat testing after the window period is recommended for reliable diagnosis.

Yes. The p24 antigen appears soon after HIV exposure and can be detected roughly 2–4 weeks post-infection, often before antibodies develop. However, p24 is transient and may fall once antibodies form, so p24 alone can miss later infections. Fourth‑generation antigen/antibody tests are preferred; if exposure is suspected test at 3–4 weeks and repeat or confirm at 12 weeks.
