High Resolution Ultrasound (HRUS) Left Thumb, in Pimpri Chinchwad

A high-resolution ultrasound uses higher-frequency sound waves and specialized probes to produce very detailed, real-time images of superficial structures—skin, thyroid, breast, tendons, joints, and blood vessels. It improves spatial resolution to detect small lesions, guide biopsies or injections, and assess soft-tissue pathology. It’s non-invasive, radiation-free, widely available, and operator-dependent for optimal image quality and interpretation.

Yes. High‑frequency ultrasound can image thumb soft tissues — tendons, ligaments (for example the ulnar collateral ligament), joint effusions, cysts and superficial foreign bodies — and can guide injections. It’s safe, radiation‑free and provides real‑time dynamic assessment. Limitations: operator dependence and limited bone penetration; MRI or X‑ray may be needed for complex fractures or deep intra‑articular pathology.

A high-resolution ultrasound of the nerves is a non-invasive imaging test using high-frequency sound waves to visualize peripheral nerves and surrounding soft tissue in real time. It shows nerve size, fascicular pattern, entrapment or compression, inflammation, tears and tumors, and can guide injections. Benefits include no radiation, portability and dynamic assessment; limitations are operator dependence and reduced accuracy for deep or bone-covered nerves.

For most thumb injuries, start with plain X‑rays (AP, lateral and oblique) to detect fractures and joint displacement. If X‑rays are normal but ligament or tendon injury is suspected—especially ulnar collateral ligament—use MRI for soft‑tissue detail or ultrasound for dynamic assessment. CT is preferred for complex intra‑articular fractures or preoperative planning.

High‑definition 3D/4D ultrasound is generally considered safe when performed by qualified clinicians for medical reasons. It uses non‑ionizing sound waves and no harmful effects have been confirmed at diagnostic exposure levels. Unnecessary or prolonged scans—such as keepsake sessions—are discouraged. Operators should follow safety principles (ALARA) and monitor thermal and mechanical indices to minimize any theoretical risks.

High-resolution ultrasound often outperforms MRI for superficial, small-structure imaging (tendons, nerves, thyroid, breast) because it gives higher spatial resolution, real-time dynamic assessment, portability, lower cost, and no contraindications. MRI is superior for deep or complex anatomy, intra‑articular structures, marrow, brain and spine, and when excellent soft-tissue contrast or whole-joint visualization is required. Choice depends on the clinical question.
