Herpes Simplex Virus 2 IgG

A positive HSV-2 IgG test indicates you have been infected with herpes simplex virus type 2 and have developed antibodies. It usually reflects past or latent infection and may occur without symptoms. The result does not prove an active outbreak or timing of infection. HSV-2 is usually not life‑threatening in healthy adults but is a lifelong infection causing recurrent painful genital blisters and emotional distress. Complications can include aseptic meningitis, more severe or disseminated disease in immunocompromised people, and increased risk of HIV acquisition. The most serious risk is neonatal herpes, which can be severe or fatal. Antiviral treatment and safe-sex practices reduce symptoms and transmission.

HSV-2 IgG antibodies usually persist for life and do not simply “go away.” Antibody levels can decline over time but typically remain detectable. Apparent loss of IgG is uncommon and may reflect early testing before seroconversion, lab variability, or immune suppression. A positive IgG shows past or ongoing infection but doesn’t necessarily mean active symptoms; consult a clinician for repeat testing or interpretation.

Testing positive for HSV‑2 is common and manageable. It’s a lifelong virus but often causes mild or no symptoms; outbreaks can be reduced with antiviral treatment and self-care. Suppressive therapy lowers recurrence and transmission. Tell sexual partners, practice safer sex, and get tested for other STIs. HSV-2 serology is usually reported as an index or titer: values below about 0.9 are negative, 0.9–1.1 are equivocal, and above 1.1 are considered positive. Laboratory reference ranges and test accuracy can vary; results should be interpreted with clinical history and, if unclear, repeat or confirmatory testing is recommended.

If HSV is left untreated, people may experience recurring painful sores and periodic viral shedding that can spread the virus to others. Untreated genital HSV increases HIV acquisition risk; rare complications include neonatal infection, aseptic meningitis, encephalitis, and ocular herpes that can threaten vision. Chronic symptoms can cause significant pain, urinary retention, and emotional distress. Antiviral treatment reduces outbreaks and transmission.
