A hepatic Doppler is a noninvasive ultrasound test that uses the Doppler effect to evaluate blood flow in the liver’s vessels — hepatic artery, portal vein and hepatic veins. It measures flow direction, velocity and patency to detect thrombosis, portal hypertension, stenosis or vascular complications after transplant. Typically performed with color and spectral Doppler alongside abdominal ultrasound, it is safe and radiation-free.

A positive Doppler means the test detected abnormal blood flow — for example, a blood clot, narrowing or reversed flow in arteries or veins, or compromised fetal circulation. It prompts further evaluation (detailed ultrasound, imaging, blood tests) and treatment tailored to the cause: anticoagulants or clot removal for DVT, vascular intervention for arterial disease, or enhanced fetal monitoring and possible early delivery in pregnancy.

Patient fasts 6–8 hours. Position supine or slight left lateral decubitus. Use a low‑frequency curvilinear probe, start in B‑mode to identify the porta hepatis and main portal vein. Use color Doppler to confirm flow, then place the PW sample gate in the mid‑portal vein. Keep the insonation angle ≤60°, use low PRF/filter for low velocities, avoid probe compression, and record spectral waveform, peak/mean velocities and flow direction.

A Doppler test (Doppler ultrasound) measures blood flow and pressure in arteries and veins to detect blockages, clots, narrowing, or poor circulation. It helps diagnose peripheral arterial disease, deep vein thrombosis, vascular graft issues, and evaluates fetal heart and placental blood flow in pregnancy. It’s a quick, noninvasive scan; preparation may include brief fasting. The operator can often discuss preliminary findings immediately, with a formal report provided later.

A liver (abdominal) ultrasound costs vary widely. In countries with public healthcare it’s usually covered; privately it ranges roughly £100–£400 in the UK. In India private labs commonly charge about ₹500–₹2,500. In the US uninsured or out‑of‑pocket costs are typically $200–$1,000 or more depending on facility, scan complexity and specialist review.
