Hepatitis E virus - IgG (HEV IgG)

HEV IgG are antibodies (immunoglobulin G) produced after infection with hepatitis E virus. Their presence on blood tests indicates past exposure or recovery and often reflects some immune memory; they typically appear weeks after acute illness and can persist for months to years, though levels may decline. IgG testing is used for diagnosis, surveillance, and assessing population exposure.

A positive hepatitis E antibody test means the immune system has encountered HEV. Detection of IgM indicates recent or acute infection; IgG indicates past infection and possible immunity. Antibody results must be interpreted with symptoms and timing; PCR testing for HEV RNA confirms active infection. In pregnant or immunocompromised people, HEV can be more severe and requires prompt medical follow-up.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a single‑stranded RNA virus that causes acute viral hepatitis, mainly spread via the fecal–oral route from contaminated water and sometimes by undercooked pork or shellfish. It typically causes jaundice, fatigue and nausea and is usually self-limiting, but can be severe in pregnant women and may become chronic in immunocompromised patients. Prevention relies on safe water, sanitation and well‑cooked food.

If hepatitis E is positive, most healthy people recover with rest, fluids, and avoiding alcohol or liver‑harmful medicines. Hospitalize for jaundice, bleeding, confusion, or worsening labs. Antiviral therapy may be used in severe or chronic cases.

Most acute hepatitis E infections are self‑limiting and resolve on their own with supportive care. In immunocompromised people HEV can become chronic, but chronic infection can often be cured with antiviral therapy (commonly ribavirin) and reducing immunosuppression. Severe or fulminant cases require hospital treatment. Prevention through safe water, sanitation and vaccination where available reduces risk.

HEV-negative blood means no detectable hepatitis E virus in the donated sample—usually confirmed by tests showing absence of HEV RNA (no active virus) and often negative HEV IgM antibodies (no recent infection). Such screening reduces the risk of transmitting hepatitis E through transfusion, protecting recipients—especially pregnant women, immunocompromised people, and those with existing liver disease.
