When does a doctor order Hepatitis Core Antibody IgM (Anti HBc - IgM)?

Hepatitis Core Antibody IgM (Anti HBc - IgM) is often included in an acute hepatitis panel and in testing after possible exposure. Doctors order it for people with symptoms like jaundice, dark urine, nausea, or unexplained liver enzyme changes.

Who should get Anti HBc - IgM done in Jodhpur?

NAFLD is rising among Jodhpur's trade, tourism and administrative workforce, driven by sedentary routines and a diet rich in ghee, sweets and fried snacks. Obesity and diabetes are the recognised drivers. Regular liver testing benefits: regular alcohol drinkers, individuals with BMI above 28, anyone on long-term medication including statins or anti-TB drugs, people with a personal or family history of hepatitis B or C, those with type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome, and all adults above 40 in annual preventive panels. In Jodhpur, residents of Basni, Bhagat Ki Kothi, and similar areas with sedentary lifestyles and calorie-dense diets face particularly elevated metabolic liver risk.

What conditions can Anti HBc - IgM help diagnose?

It helps diagnose recent hepatitis B infection and guide early treatment and infection control. Abnormal results most commonly reflect recent viral infection from exposures such as unprotected sex or shared needles; immune status and timing after exposure affect results. Family or household contact with hepatitis B makes this test especially important.

What do Anti HBc - IgM results mean?

ALT above 56 U/L or AST above 40 U/L signals hepatocyte stress. The pattern matters: ALT greater than AST typically suggests NAFLD or viral hepatitis. An AST:ALT ratio above 2 points to alcoholic hepatitis. High ALP with normal transaminases suggests bile duct disease rather than liver cell damage. Low albumin alongside high bilirubin indicates serious loss of liver function.

How often should Anti HBc - IgM be repeated?

Adults with no liver risk factors and a previously normal result: annually. Patients with NAFLD or treated hepatitis: every 6 months. Patients on hepatotoxic medication: baseline before starting, then at 1 month, 3 months, and every 6 months during treatment. Patients with active liver disease: at intervals specified by their gastroenterologist.

What happens after your Anti HBc - IgM results are ready?

You will be notified as soon as the laboratory releases your results, usually within 24 to 48 hours. Open the report in the GetVisit app to see each value beside its reference range, share it with your doctor in a tap, or book a specialist consultation to talk it through.
