Hepatitis B surface Antibody Total (Anti HBs)

A positive hepatitis B surface antibody (anti‑HBs) means you have protective immunity to hepatitis B, from vaccination or past infection. A titer of ≥10 mIU/mL is generally regarded as protective. Anti‑HBs positivity does not indicate active infection (that is detected by HBsAg). Typically no treatment is needed; follow-up or boosters may be considered for high‑risk or immunocompromised individuals.

The anti‑HBs (hepatitis B surface antibody) is reported in mIU/mL. A level below 10 mIU/mL is considered negative (non‑immune). A level of ≥10 mIU/mL indicates protective immunity; values roughly 10–100 mIU/mL are low‑positive while ≥100 mIU/mL denotes a strong immune response. Clinical interpretation may vary, so discuss results with your clinician.

Pregnant women are screened for hepatitis B; if HBsAg positive, viral load and liver tests guide care. Women with high HBV DNA (usually >200,000 IU/mL) are offered antiviral therapy, commonly tenofovir, from about 28 to 32 weeks to reduce mother-to-child transmission. Newborns should receive hepatitis B immune globulin and the first vaccine dose within 12 hours of birth, followed by the vaccine series. Breastfeeding is allowed with infant prophylaxis.

An HBsAb (anti‑HBs) level of about 1000 mIU/mL indicates very strong immunity to hepatitis B—well above the protective threshold (≥10 mIU/mL). It usually reflects successful vaccination or past resolved infection. If hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) is negative, this means no active infection and no booster is typically needed; discuss individual factors (e.g., immunosuppression) with your clinician.

Anti-HBs positive means you have protective antibodies against hepatitis B, indicating immunity from past infection recovery or vaccination. A level of ≥10 mIU/mL is generally considered protective. Anti-HBs alone won’t distinguish vaccination from prior infection—anti-HBc can clarify that. You can get hepatitis B from your husband if you’re exposed to his infected blood, semen, or vaginal fluids — most commonly through unprotected sex, sharing needles, or contact with open cuts. Vaccination, condoms, and avoiding shared needles greatly reduce risk.
