Hemoglobin and Hematocrit

Hemoglobin is the oxygen-carrying protein inside red blood cells, reported in grams per deciliter (g/dL) and reflecting blood’s oxygen-carrying capacity. Hematocrit is the percentage of blood volume made up by red blood cells, reported as a percent (%) and reflecting red cell mass and blood concentration (affected by hydration). Both help diagnose anemia or polycythemia but measure different things.

Low hemoglobin and hematocrit indicate anemia — reduced red blood cell mass and oxygen-carrying capacity.
