Haptoglobin

Haptoglobin is a plasma glycoprotein that binds free hemoglobin released during red blood cell breakdown, forming complexes cleared by macrophage receptors. This prevents oxidative tissue and kidney damage, conserves iron for reuse, and limits inflammation. Haptoglobin is an acute‑phase protein whose levels rise in inflammation and fall during intravascular hemolysis, making it a useful clinical marker.
