What is a GTT (75gm glucose) Test in Hyderabad ?
What is GTT (75gm glucose)?
The GTT (75gm glucose) measures how your body handles a fixed glucose load. It tracks blood sugar levels over time after you drink a 75 gram glucose solution. This shows how well insulin and your pancreas are working to clear sugar from the blood. India has the world's second-largest absolute diabetes burden, and the majority of cases remain undiagnosed for years before detection , a gap that regular testing directly addresses.
What does GTT (75gm glucose) measure?
Doctors use it to find diabetes, prediabetes, and gestational diabetes. It also helps when symptoms are unclear or when screening is needed because of risk factors. Results guide treatment, lifestyle changes, and follow-up testing. HbA1c reflects the average blood glucose over the past 3 months , unaffected by a single meal or day-to-day variation , making it more stable than a single fasting glucose reading.
What symptoms suggest GTT (75gm glucose) may be needed?
A doctor may order GTT (75gm glucose) when a patient reports excessive thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, blurred vision, fatigue, slow-healing wounds or cuts, recurrent skin or urinary tract infections, and tingling or numbness in the hands or feet. In Hyderabad, residents of HITEC City and Kondapur commonly present for this test after noticing these symptoms during a routine or preventive consultation.
How is GTT (75gm glucose) performed?
A certified phlebotomist cleans the inner elbow, locates a vein, inserts a fine sterile needle, and draws the required blood (typically 5 to 10 mL). The procedure takes 3 to 5 minutes. You feel a brief pinch at insertion and mild pressure during collection. You can eat, drink, drive, and resume all activities immediately afterwards.
How accurate is GTT (75gm glucose)?
Rare causes of inaccurate results include: very high biotin supplementation (interferes with immunoassays), haemolysed samples from difficult venipuncture, or failure to fast when fasting was required. Following preparation instructions and using a trained phlebotomist minimises these risks.
Are there any risks to GTT (75gm glucose)?
This is a low-risk procedure. The only intervention is the blood draw. Side effects are limited to a brief pinch and an occasional small bruise at the puncture site, which resolves in 24 to 48 hours without treatment. Patients on anticoagulants should hold light pressure for 3 to 5 minutes after the draw.
GTT (75gm glucose) Test Preparation in Hyderabad
Fasting and dietary instructions:
Fast for 8 to 12 hours before the test. Water is allowed and encouraged , drink 2 to 3 glasses before leaving home. Avoid tea, coffee, juice, food, alcohol, and supplements during the fasting window.
Medication guidance:
If you are on insulin or oral hypoglycaemic medication, follow your doctor's specific advice. For most fasting glucose tests, take medication after the sample is collected. HbA1c timing does not affect results.
What to bring:
Carry your doctor's test order, a government-issued photo ID, and your OPD insurance card. If you have had this test before, bring previous reports , your doctor can compare results over time.
Timing:
Book the earliest available morning slot. For fasting tests, an overnight fast followed by a morning draw represents the optimal balance between adequate fasting duration and test accuracy.

Why Take a GTT (75gm glucose) Test in Hyderabad ?
When does a doctor order GTT (75gm glucose)?
Your doctor orders GTT (75gm glucose) when you have symptoms of high blood sugar (excessive thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, slow-healing wounds), when you have obesity or a family history of diabetes, or as part of a routine annual health check for adults above 30.
Who should get GTT (75gm glucose) done in Hyderabad?
Hyderabad has been identified in multiple studies as having among India's highest urban diabetes rates , with estimates placing urban Telangana's prevalence above 25%. The city's large IT workforce in HITEC City, Gachibowli, Madhapur, and Kondapur , largely desk-bound, often eating calorie-dense food , faces significant metabolic risk from as young as 28. GTT (75gm glucose) is part of diabetes screening and gestational diabetes evaluation. Doctors may order it if you have symptoms like excessive thirst, frequent urination, unexplained tiredness, or if routine blood sugar tests are borderline. Adults above 30 in Hyderabad benefit from periodic health screening that includes GTT (75gm glucose) as part of a broader preventive panel. Residents of Kondapur, Gachibowli, and across the city with chronic conditions, those on long-term medication, and individuals with a relevant family history should test at the frequency their specialist recommends.
What conditions can GTT (75gm glucose) help diagnose?
The conditions diagnosable through GTT (75gm glucose) depend on the specific markers the test measures. Results either confirm a suspected diagnosis, support a clinical suspicion requiring further investigation, or effectively exclude the condition the test was screening for.
What do GTT (75gm glucose) results mean?
Post-meal glucose (2 hours after eating) above 140 mg/dL indicates impaired glucose tolerance. Above 200 mg/dL with symptoms is diagnostic of diabetes. Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT): 2-hour value below 140 mg/dL is normal, 140–199 mg/dL is pre-diabetes, 200 mg/dL or above is diabetes.
How often should GTT (75gm glucose) be repeated?
For preventive screening with a normal baseline: annually for most adults above 35. For monitoring a known condition: at the interval your specialist recommends , typically every 3 to 6 months for active conditions and annually for stable, well-controlled ones.
What happens after GTT (75gm glucose) results are ready?
Once your results appear in your GetVisit profile, discuss them with your doctor or a GetVisit-verified specialist. Your doctor will interpret each value in the context of your full health history, current medications, and symptoms , and advise on the next step: lifestyle change, repeat testing, medication adjustment, or specialist referral. All GetVisit reports are stored permanently and can be shared with any doctor instantly.
