Glucose - Random

A random blood glucose test measures blood sugar at any time, regardless of when you last ate. It uses a finger-prick or venous sample to check for high glucose. It’s used to screen for or monitor diabetes; a reading ≥200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) with classic hyperglycemia symptoms suggests diabetes, while lower values require fasting or HbA1c testing for diagnosis.

A high random blood glucose indicates elevated blood sugar (hyperglycemia). It may reflect undiagnosed diabetes, poor control in known diabetes, or temporary causes like illness, stress, steroids or recent meals. Persistent high levels raise risk of complications (heart, nerves, kidneys). Repeat testing—fasting glucose, HbA1c or glucose tolerance—and medical evaluation are recommended to confirm diagnosis and guide treatment.

Normal random (non-fasting) blood sugar is generally below 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L). Values around 140–199 mg/dL are higher than normal and may need monitoring or further testing, while a random glucose of 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) or above, especially with symptoms, suggests diabetes and requires urgent medical evaluation and treatment as needed.

Normal random (non‑fasting) blood glucose is generally about 70–140 mg/dL (3.9–7.8 mmol/L) across children, adolescents and adults; younger children may run slightly lower. Random levels persistently ≥200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) with symptoms suggest diabetes and need urgent evaluation. Fasting glucose and HbA1c are used for definitive diagnosis; age‑specific targets can vary for infants and older adults.

Low "random" glucose means a blood sugar test taken at any time (not fasting) that’s below normal—usually under 70 mg/dL (3.9 mmol/L). It signals hypoglycemia, often from diabetes medicines, missed meals, alcohol, or illness. Symptoms include sweating, trembling, confusion, or fainting. Confirm with repeat testing and treat immediately with 15–20 g fast‑acting carbohydrate; seek urgent care if severe or recurrent.

High random blood sugar can result from insufficient insulin production or insulin resistance (diabetes), missed or inadequate medications, eating high‑carbohydrate meals, physical inactivity, stress or illness, infections, steroid or other medication use, dehydration, hormonal disorders (e.g., Cushing’s), pancreatitis, and excessive alcohol. Acute medical conditions or surgeries can also raise glucose temporarily.
