Gliadin IgG Antibody

A high gliadin IgG indicates an immune reaction to gliadin, a component of gluten. It may reflect non‑celiac gluten sensitivity, increased intestinal permeability, or prior gluten exposure; alone it does not definitively diagnose celiac disease. Further evaluation (tTG‑IgA and total IgA testing, possible referral/biopsy) and clinical correlation are needed before changing diet. Discuss results with your clinician.

Typically, a normal (negative) deamidated gliadin peptide (DGP) IgG is below about 20 U/mL (some assays use <10 U/mL). Values around 20–30 U/mL are often considered borderline, and >30 U/mL usually positive. Reference ranges and units vary by laboratory and test, so interpret results with clinical context and other celiac investigations (eg, tTG IgA).

There is no single universal IgG cutoff for celiac disease—values depend on the specific assay and lab reference range. In IgA‑deficient patients, a positive IgG deamidated gliadin peptide (DGP‑IgG) or IgG tTG above the lab’s upper reference (commonly around >20 U/mL in many assays) raises suspicion. Diagnosis requires clinical correlation and usually intestinal biopsy or HLA testing for confirmation.

Gliadin antibodies are immune proteins (IgA or IgG) produced against gliadin, a component of wheat gluten. Their presence indicates an immune reaction to gluten and may occur in celiac disease or non‑celiac gluten sensitivity. They were historically used for screening but are less specific than tissue transglutaminase antibodies; results must be interpreted with clinical findings and, if needed, intestinal biopsy.

High IgG (especially a monoclonal IgG paraprotein) is most commonly seen in plasma‑cell disorders such as multiple myeloma, solitary plasmacytoma, and IgG‑type MGUS. Certain B‑cell lymphomas and chronic lymphocytic leukemia can also produce monoclonal IgG. Polyclonal IgG elevations usually reflect infections or autoimmune disease; solid tumors rarely cause isolated IgG rises.

Early warning signs of celiac disease include persistent digestive problems (chronic diarrhea or constipation, bloating, abdominal pain), unexplained weight loss or poor growth in children, persistent fatigue and iron‑deficiency anemia, recurrent mouth ulcers and an itchy blistering rash (dermatitis herpetiformis). Neurological symptoms like numbness/tingling, bone or joint pain, delayed puberty, and unexplained nutrient deficiencies can also signal celiac disease.
