What is a Free Light Chains (Kappa & Lambda) Test?
The free light chains test measures kappa and lambda light-chain proteins that circulate in the blood. These light chains are parts of antibodies made by plasma cells. The balance and amount of each type tell doctors whether plasma cells are producing too much of one light chain. Abnormal results can point to conditions like multiple myeloma, MGUS, or light‑chain amyloidosis. Kidney disease can also change levels and ratios, so results are interpreted with kidney tests. Doctors use this test along with other blood and urine tests, imaging, and sometimes bone marrow studies to diagnose disease, follow treatment response, and watch for relapse.
