A FibroTouch liver scan is a non-invasive ultrasound-based test that measures liver stiffness and fat content using vibration-controlled transient elastography. It produces quick, painless numeric scores for fibrosis (scarring) and steatosis (fat) to help diagnose and monitor chronic liver disease. It’s outpatient and repeatable, reducing the need for biopsy, though biopsy may still be required in some cases.

Normal liver stiffness on FibroTouch is generally <6.0 kPa. Readings 6–7.9 kPa suggest mild fibrosis, 8–9.5 kPa significant (F2), 9.5–12.5 kPa advanced (F3), and ≥12.5–14 kPa indicate cirrhosis (F4). Fat attenuation (FAP/CAP) <240 dB/m is usually no steatosis; higher values indicate increasing steatosis (~240–260, 260–290, >290 dB/m).

FibroScan cost varies by country and clinic. In the UK it’s usually free on the NHS but private scans run about £150–£350. In the US typical out‑of‑pocket fees range roughly $150–$500. In India private centres commonly charge about ₹2,000–₹6,000. Prices depend on facility, extra tests, and insurance—check with your provider for exact fees and coverage.

A normal liver stiffness on FibroScan is generally under about 6 kPa, suggesting little or no fibrosis. Values around 7–9 kPa may indicate significant fibrosis, while commonly >12–14 kPa suggest cirrhosis. Exact cutoffs vary with device, inflammation, BMI and clinical context, so results should be interpreted alongside blood tests and clinical assessment.

FibroScan (transient elastography) measures liver stiffness and fat but does not visualize focal lesions. It cannot reliably detect or characterize tumors. It can suggest advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis, conditions that raise liver cancer risk, but dedicated imaging (ultrasound, CT, MRI) and, if needed, biopsy are required to identify and diagnose tumors.
