Fetal Color Dopple, in Navi Mumbai

A color Doppler scan is performed when clinicians need to assess fetal and placental blood flow—commonly in the second and third trimesters. Indications include suspected fetal growth restriction, pre‑eclampsia, reduced fetal movements, abnormal fetal heart trace or CTG, twin complications (e.g., twin‑to‑twin transfusion), or abnormal ultrasound findings. It’s used selectively whenever placental insufficiency or fetal well‑being is in question.

A color Doppler ultrasound is normally non‑invasive and not painful. Most people feel only light pressure from the transducer and cold gel; scanning over a tender or swollen area can cause mild discomfort. There’s no recovery time and serious side effects are rare. If an intravenous contrast is used, you might feel brief stinging at the injection site.

A fetal Doppler detects heartbeat and cannot reliably determine sex. Sex is usually identified by ultrasound visualization of external genitalia during the anatomy scan (typically 18–20 weeks), with accuracy depending on fetal position, gestational age, and operator skill. Home Dopplers and fetal heart‑rate myths (e.g., >140 bpm = girl) are unreliable. Earlier sex determination is possible via cell‑free DNA testing (NIPT).

The best time for a color Doppler depends on the indication. For suspected vascular problems (DVT, arterial insufficiency, carotid disease) have it promptly when symptoms arise or as your clinician advises; sometimes both at rest and after exercise. In pregnancy, Doppler is commonly performed in the second trimester (about 18–24 weeks) or later if growth, placental, or fetal blood‑flow concerns appear.

The last routine scan in an uncomplicated pregnancy is the mid‑pregnancy anatomy (level 2) scan at about 18–20 weeks. Additional third‑trimester ultrasounds are not routine and are performed only if indicated—for fetal growth, placental position, reduced movements or bleeding. When done, late‑pregnancy growth scans commonly occur around 32–36 weeks (sometimes near 36–38 weeks).

A positive Doppler test usually indicates abnormal or reduced blood flow—often suggesting a blood clot (DVT) or arterial blockage. It prompts further evaluation (repeat ultrasound, imaging, blood tests) and urgent treatment, which may include anticoagulant medication, compression stockings, or procedures (thrombolysis or surgery) depending on severity. Close monitoring and follow‑up with a vascular specialist or your clinician are essential.
