Eye check-up

An eye checkup typically measures visual acuity (reading a chart), performs refractive testing for glasses, and assesses eye alignment and movement. The doctor examines lids and front structures with a slit lamp, checks intraocular pressure (tonometry) for glaucoma risk, and inspects the retina and optic nerve—often after pupil dilation. Peripheral and color vision testing and eye‑health advice may also be provided.

An "eye check-up doctor" is usually an optometrist, the primary eye‑care professional who performs vision tests, prescribes glasses and contact lenses, and screens for eye conditions. More complex medical or surgical eye problems are managed by an ophthalmologist, a medical doctor and surgeon. An optician fits and dispenses lenses but does not perform eye examinations.
