Excercise Stess Echo

An echo stress exercise (exercise stress echocardiogram) is a noninvasive cardiac test using ultrasound images of the heart before and immediately after physical exercise (treadmill or bike) to detect abnormal wall motion and signs of reduced blood flow (ischemia). It evaluates coronary artery disease, symptoms like chest pain, and functional capacity while monitoring ECG and blood pressure; drugs are used if a patient cannot exercise.

A normal (negative) exercise stress test shows good exercise tolerance with attainment of target heart rate, no chest pain or concerning symptoms, no significant ECG changes such as ischemic ST‑segment depression, a normal blood pressure response, and no sustained abnormal heart rhythms. It suggests adequate blood supply to the heart during exertion and low likelihood of significant coronary ischemia.

An exercise stress test monitors heart function during graded physical exertion (treadmill or bicycle). ECG, heart rate, blood pressure and symptoms are recorded while workload increases to a target level. Doctors watch for abnormal ECG changes, chest pain, blood pressure drops, or arrhythmias indicating reduced blood flow or impaired exercise capacity. Some tests include imaging to detect regional wall-motion or perfusion defects; recovery is monitored.

Wear comfortable, loose exercise clothes suitable for brisk walking or biking. Women should wear a sports bra (no underwire) and bring a spare top so your chest is accessible for ECG leads. Wear supportive, non-slip athletic shoes. Avoid metal jewelry, perfume, oils or powders that interfere with electrodes. Bring a light jacket or layers and a change of clothes if needed.

A stress echocardiogram is generally not painful. The ultrasound probe on the chest causes only mild pressure; IV placement may cause a brief sting. During exercise or pharmacologic stress you may feel breathlessness, chest tightness, palpitations, flushing or dizziness — these are usually temporary. Serious complications are rare and monitoring is continuous; tell staff immediately if you have significant chest pain or unusual symptoms.

You'll often get an immediate verbal summary from the cardiologist right after the stress echocardiogram. A formal written report is usually ready the same day or within 24–48 hours. If there’s an urgent abnormality, staff will contact you or your doctor the same day. Routine results may be sent to your GP or specialist within a few days—confirm timing with the testing centre.
