Estradiol ultrasensitive refers to a laboratory assay that detects very low concentrations of estradiol (a form of estrogen) with greater sensitivity and accuracy than standard tests. It’s used to monitor hormone replacement, fertility treatments, pubertal development, or to detect low-level estrogen in men and postmenopausal women. Results inform diagnosis and treatment where precise low-range measurement is needed.

Normal serum estradiol (pg/mL) varies by age and cycle. Prepubertal children: <20 pg/mL. Adult males: ~10–40 pg/mL. Reproductive‑age women: follicular 20–150 pg/mL, mid‑cycle (ovulatory) peak 150–750 pg/mL, luteal 30–450 pg/mL. Pregnant levels rise markedly by trimester. Postmenopausal women: generally <20–30 pg/mL. Always interpret results with clinical context and the lab reference range.

High estradiol indicates elevated estrogen activity and can arise from pregnancy, estrogen therapy, estrogen-secreting ovarian tumors, polycystic ovary syndrome, obesity, or liver disease. Symptoms include breast tenderness, bloating, mood changes, irregular bleeding, and in men gynecomastia. Persistently high levels raise risks like endometrial hyperplasia and clotting. Evaluation by a clinician, review of medications, repeat testing and targeted imaging or hormonal workup is recommended.

The estradiol test measures blood levels of estradiol, the primary female estrogen. It assesses ovarian function, menstrual irregularities, infertility, ovulation timing and menopausal status, and monitors hormone replacement or fertility treatment.
