Entamoeba histolytica IgG Antibody (Amoebiasis)

A positive Entamoeba histolytica test means the pathogenic amoeba is present in stool or tissue, indicating amoebiasis. It may reflect asymptomatic colonization or active disease causing diarrhea, bloody stools, abdominal pain, or liver abscess. Confirmation guides treatment (tissue-active agent plus luminal cyst eradication) and contact/hygiene measures. Further tests distinguish nonpathogenic Entamoeba species.

In pregnancy, treat invasive amoebiasis with a systemic nitroimidazole (metronidazole or tinidazole) when needed, followed by an intraluminal agent (paromomycin) to eradicate cysts. For asymptomatic intestinal carriage, use paromomycin alone. Paromomycin is preferred in pregnancy; nitroimidazoles may be used for severe disease under obstetric guidance. Always consult your obstetrician before starting therapy.

Entamoeba histolytica ranges from asymptomatic colonization to life‑threatening invasive disease. It can cause amoebic dysentery with bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever, and can invade the liver to form abscesses; complications include perforation, peritonitis and sepsis. Risk is higher in malnourished or immunocompromised people. Effective antiparasitic treatment usually cures it, but delayed care raises morbidity and mortality.

Amoebiasis, caused by Entamoeba histolytica, ranges from mild or asymptomatic infection to serious disease. It can cause bloody diarrhea (dysentery), colitis, and liver abscesses; complications such as intestinal perforation, peritonitis, or sepsis can be life‑threatening. Risk is higher in young children, malnourished or immunocompromised people. Prompt diagnosis and antiparasitic treatment usually cure it; good sanitation and safe water prevent spread.

Entamoeba histolytica primarily spreads via the fecal–oral route (contaminated food or water) and causes intestinal and sometimes liver disease. It is not classified as a sexually transmitted infection, but sexual transmission—especially oral–anal contact among men who have sex with men—can occur. Diagnosis uses stool tests or serology; treatment combines a tissue-active drug (e.g., metronidazole) plus a luminal agent.

People most at risk for Entamoeba infection include travelers to or residents of developing countries with poor sanitation, users of contaminated food or water, and those living in overcrowded or institutional settings. Children, immunocompromised individuals (including people with HIV), malnourished persons, and men who have sex with men (due to oral–anal exposure) also have higher risk. Outbreaks occur where hygiene and sanitation are inadequate.
