An echo, or echocardiogram, is a non‑invasive ultrasound of the heart that uses sound waves to produce moving images. It evaluates heart size, chamber and valve function, pumping strength (ejection fraction), wall motion and blood flow. Performed transthoracically or transesophageally, it helps diagnose heart failure, valve disease, infections, clots, congenital issues and causes of shortness of breath or murmurs.

A heart echo test (echocardiogram) is a non‑invasive ultrasound that uses sound waves to create moving images of the heart. An echocardiogram uses ultrasound to image heart structures and motion, evaluating chamber size, wall movement, valve function and pumping (ejection fraction). ECG gives electrical information; echo gives anatomical and functional imaging. Both are noninvasive and complementary in cardiac assessment.

An echo (echocardiogram) and an MCU (micturating cystourethrogram) are unrelated investigations. An echo uses ultrasound to evaluate heart structure and function, whereas an MCU is a contrast X‑ray fluoroscopy study of the bladder and urethra during voiding to detect reflux or obstruction. They assess different organ systems and are not directly connected except in rare, specific clinical scenarios.

An echo happens when sound waves reflect off surfaces and return to the listener, producing a delayed repetition. Perceived internal echoes can result from ear infections, middle‑ear dysfunction, hearing loss, or neurological disorders. Repetition of others’ speech (echolalia) arises from developmental or brain conditions such as autism, stroke‑related aphasia, or other neurological injury affecting speech control.

Reduce echoes by adding soft, sound-absorbing materials: thick rugs, heavy curtains, upholstered furniture, and acoustic panels or foam on walls/ceiling. Use bookshelves, fabric wall hangings, and room dividers to break reflections. Seal gaps around doors and windows, and reposition furniture to interrupt sound paths. For persistent problems, install suspended baffles or professional acoustic treatments.
