What is DSA?
DSA measures antibodies in a person’s blood that react against a transplant donor’s tissues. These antibodies are part of the immune system. It is particularly important for people with diabetes or hypertension , the two leading causes of chronic kidney disease in India, responsible for over 60% of cases requiring dialysis.
What does DSA measure?
They can attach to the donated organ and cause inflammation or damage. Detecting DSA helps doctors find and treat antibody-mediated rejection. It also helps assess how “sensitized” a patient is before transplant. Doctors use DSA testing before transplant to match donors and after transplant to investigate rising creatinine, reduced urine output, fever, or other signs of graft trouble.
What symptoms suggest DSA may be needed?
A doctor may recommend DSA when a patient reports ankle or leg swelling, reduced urine output, frothy or foamy urine, persistent fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, persistent itching, muscle cramps, and high blood pressure. Patients with known kidney disease: at the interval set by their nephrologist. Anyone starting a drug cleared by the kidneys: at baseline and periodically thereafter.
