Drugs Of Abuse- (Qualitative)

A qualitative drug screen is a laboratory test that detects the presence or absence of specific drugs or drug classes in a biological sample (urine, blood, saliva, or hair). It reports positive/negative results but does not measure drug concentration. Commonly used for initial clinical, workplace, or forensic screening, positive findings usually require confirmatory, more specific testing to identify the drug and rule out false positives.

The four main types of drug abuse are stimulants (e.g., cocaine, amphetamines), depressants (e.g., alcohol, benzodiazepines), opioids (e.g., heroin, prescription painkillers), and hallucinogens (e.g., LSD, PCP). Stimulants increase alertness; depressants slow brain activity; opioids relieve pain and cause euphoria; hallucinogens alter perception. All carry risks of dependence, health harm, and overdose.

The six major classifications of drugs of abuse are: 1) Depressants (alcohol, benzodiazepines, barbiturates); 2) Stimulants (cocaine, amphetamines, methamphetamine); 3) Opioids (heroin, morphine, prescription oxycodone); 4) Hallucinogens (LSD, psilocybin); 5) Dissociatives (PCP, ketamine); and 6) Inhalants (solvents, aerosol propellants). They differ by primary CNS effects.

Drugs of abuse include substances taken for nonmedical effects: opioids (heroin, fentanyl, prescription painkillers), stimulants (cocaine, amphetamines, methamphetamine), sedatives and tranquilizers (benzodiazepines, barbiturates), alcohol and nicotine, cannabis, hallucinogens (LSD, psilocybin), inhalants, and anabolic steroids. These substances can cause dependence, harm health, impair function, and carry overdose or legal risks. They may be illegal or misused prescription medicines.

Qualitative drug tests detect whether a drug or its metabolite is present, giving a yes/no or screening result for initial checks. Quantitative tests measure the drug’s concentration and provide numeric levels, useful for dosing, therapeutic monitoring, or confirmatory analysis. Quantitative methods are typically more specific and sensitive; qualitative tests are faster and cheaper for broad screening.

The four steps in qualitative drug analysis are: 1) sample collection, preservation and chain-of-custody; 2) preliminary screening (visual inspection, physical tests and presumptive/color tests) to suggest drug class; 3) confirmatory testing using instrumental techniques (GC‑MS, LC‑MS, IR, Raman) to identify specific compounds; 4) data interpretation, documentation, quality assurance and formal reporting for clinical or legal use.
