Drugs of Abuse (Qualitative)-Methamphetamine, Amphetamine, Opiates, Marijuana, Cocaine

Common categories of drug abuse include: depressants (alcohol, benzodiazepines) — slow the brain and reduce anxiety; opioids (heroin, prescription painkillers) — pain relief and euphoria with high addiction risk; stimulants (cocaine, amphetamines) — increase alertness and energy; hallucinogens (LSD, psilocybin) — alter perception; cannabis (marijuana) — psychoactive cannabinoids; inhalants (volatile solvents) — rapid intoxication from huffing.

The seven major drug types are: stimulants (increase central nervous system activity and alertness); depressants/sedatives (slow brain function, cause relaxation); hallucinogens (alter perception and cognition); opioids/narcotics (powerful pain relievers with high addiction risk); cannabinoids (THC/CBD compounds from cannabis); inhalants (volatile solvents/gases); anabolic steroids (synthetic hormones to build muscle). All can cause harm and dependence.

Drugs are commonly grouped into four types: stimulants (increase alertness and heart rate; e.g., amphetamines), depressants (slow brain activity and breathing; e.g., benzodiazepines, alcohol), opioids or narcotics (powerful pain relievers causing euphoria and respiratory depression; e.g., morphine, heroin), and hallucinogens (alter perception and cognition; e.g., LSD, psilocybin). Major drugs of abuse include alcohol and nicotine/tobacco; opioids (heroin and prescription painkillers like morphine, oxycodone); stimulants (cocaine, methamphetamine, amphetamines); cannabis; benzodiazepines and other sedatives; hallucinogens (LSD, psilocybin, PCP); inhalants; and newer synthetic drugs (synthetic cannabinoids, cathinones/"bath salts") — plus misuse of other prescription medicines. All carry risks of dependence, overdose, mental health harms, infections and organ damage.

Examples of commonly used drugs include paracetamol (acetaminophen), ibuprofen, aspirin, amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin, metformin, insulin, atorvastatin, omeprazole, and loratadine. These represent analgesics, antibiotics, antidiabetics, statins, proton pump inhibitors, and antihistamines used for pain, infection, diabetes, high cholesterol, acid reflux, and allergies, commonly prescribed or available over-the-counter worldwide. Opioids are medicines that relieve moderate-to-severe pain by binding opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord. They include natural (morphine, codeine) and synthetic (oxycodone, fentanyl) drugs. Effective for acute and chronic pain, they carry risks of tolerance, dependence, addiction and life‑threatening respiratory depression. Common side effects are constipation, drowsiness and nausea.
