Question 1

What indicates a failed stress test?

Accepted Answer

A “failed” (abnormal) stress test is indicated by reproducible chest pain/angina during exertion; new significant ECG changes (horizontal/downsloping ST depression ≥1 mm, ST elevation, or new bundle-branch block); dangerous arrhythmias (sustained ventricular tachycardia); marked blood pressure drop or inadequate rise with symptoms; or inability to complete the test due to severe symptoms. These findings suggest myocardial ischemia and need further evaluation.

Question 2

What to expect with a stress echo test?

Accepted Answer

A stress echocardiogram evaluates heart function under stress. You'll have baseline ultrasound images, ECG and blood pressure monitoring, then exercise on a treadmill or receive medication to raise heart rate. Echocardiogram images are taken at peak stress and recovery. The test lasts about 30–60 minutes; you may feel breathless or mild chest pressure. Wear comfortable clothes and follow instructions about medications and fasting.

Question 3

What does it mean when a stress test is positive?

Accepted Answer

A positive stress test means exercise or medication-induced stress produced signs of reduced blood flow to the heart (ischemia) — such as abnormal ECG changes, chest pain, or blood-pressure/arrhythmia abnormalities. It suggests possible obstructive coronary artery disease but isn’t definitive; further evaluation (imaging, coronary angiography) and treatment (risk-factor control, medications, or revascularization) are usually recommended.

Question 4

How long does a stress echo test take?

Accepted Answer

A stress echocardiogram usually takes 30–60 minutes from arrival to finish. Preparation and baseline imaging take 10–15 minutes, the exercise or pharmacologic stress phase typically lasts 10–15 minutes, and immediate post‑stress images plus recovery require another 10–30 minutes. If complications or extra monitoring occur, the appointment may extend to about 90 minutes. Wear comfortable clothing.

Question 5

What is the recovery time after a stress test?

Accepted Answer

Recovery after a cardiac stress test is usually quick: you’ll be observed ten to thirty minutes and most people feel back to normal within thirty minutes to a few hours. Mild fatigue or muscle soreness may last a day. Pharmacologic or sedated stress tests can lengthen recovery and may require several hours’ rest or temporary restrictions, such as avoiding driving. Contact your clinician if symptoms persist.

Question 6

Does an echo stress test show blockage?

Accepted Answer

A stress echocardiogram does not directly image coronary artery blockages. It evaluates heart wall motion and function during exercise or drug-induced stress; new or worsening wall-motion abnormalities suggest reduced blood flow from significant blockages. A normal stress echo lowers the likelihood of severe obstructive disease but doesn’t rule out smaller or non–flow-limiting plaques; coronary angiography or CT angiography visualizes blockages.
